A few months ago I also started to get algae after I upgraded the
lights and increased the weekly dose of fertilizer. I do not know if
it was the same type of algae as yours. Mine was green strands a few
inches long and it grew on the gravel and the plants. I also had a
black, soot-like covering on old plant leaves. Somebody at the fish
club I belong to told to add potassium. I bought Kent Botanica K and
started adding the recommended dose once a week.

It worked! No more algae, and my plants have never looked better.

Are these tufts white, by chance? Just checking, as that would mean a
different problem.
