View Full Version : Are Prism skimmers state of the art?

I have been experiementing with a Prism protein skimmer. Getting and
keeping the flow rate / foam level right seems to be a bit of a black
magic art (which I am getting the hang of), but I am also finding it
quite noisy as the tank is in the main living area of the house.
The skimmer I have is the type that hangs off the side. It was
recommended for a 65 gallon tank with no sump.
Is this state of the art or are there better units on the market?
Don't mind paying a bit more to replace the Prism if necessary,
especially for something quieter.

I have the prism and it works great for me. I found it loud on the outer (or
is it the inner?) tube
setting for the air but after a week I moved it to the other one and it
seems quieter.
Of course there is always better equipment to buy if you want to spend the
money.

In short, prizms are doo-doo, a small step above the airstone-driven
units, though I used one for a time, thinking it was working well. At
continued prompting from friends, I replaced it with an AquaC unit,
and Holy-Freakin-Crap, I had no idea how poorly that prizm had been
performing. The AquaC unit pulled easily 4 times the goo out of my
tank, was quieter, required less maintenance, and heck, it even
looked cooler. Do a quick search for "Prizm Skimmer" on
www.reefcentral.com and you'll get tons more info from much more
serious reefers than I.

I'm an AquaC fan myself. I like my DIY beckett skimmer though. You can't
beat the price on it - for about $20 in parts it kicks the crap out of the
Remora Pro I used to have hanging on my FOWLR tank. As for the reef tank I
use an AquaC EV-150, I love that skimmer.
