View Full Version : betta sucked up in siphon!
Danya
September 15th 04, 02:57 AM
about 5 days ago, i bought some medication for my male betta who had
fin rot. following the instructions, i was to perform a water change
before adding the medication. well i was talking with my mom and i
look and all the sudden he's up in the siphon tube! i practically
freaked out and wondered how he got in there (which was dumb, because
he IS in a 1 gal tank), and quickly let the siphon stop running. now
he has what looks like a small circular outline on his body. near his
top fin is the worst and he has a big "sore" there. i was planning on
doing another dose of the fungus eliminator for the fin rot, would
this also help if any fungus/bacterial infection were to develop on
the sore?
TIA

I'm a bit confused.
Did the poor guy have this sore before he was sucked up into the syphon or
after?
Do you have a digital camera that you can take a picture of it with?
FYI.....since you're on AOL also, there is a Betta message board.
If you'd like the link, just drop me an email.
Tons of Betta freaks there. = )
In no way do I mean go there *instead* of here...I mean that you may want to
add it to the places you post Q's.
Jungle's Fungus Eliminator works on both true fungus and bacterial infections.
It would be the medication that I would have suggested for Fin Rot.
Do tell me more about this lesion though.

I'm a firm believer in MelaFix and PimaFix, always had luck with
them, though I'd research their use on labyrinth fishes first, I've
no experience there.

I don't mean to sound insensitive, and I certainly hope this fish comes out
OK as Danya is doing her best with the problem, but I have this somewhat
humorous mental image of a betta sucked up against a tube kind of like
putting your palm over a vacuum's wand attachment. I'm wondering if Danya
had to blow the fish back into the bowl from the tube...

Actually I had the same thing happen with a silver molly, but she wasn't so
lucky and died about 10 mins later. :(

Melafix isn't going to cure Fin Rot.
Melafix is good for things like *helping* a fish out when healing from an
injury or after it had a disease.
I've heard of too many folks treating (as a cure) Fin Rot with it and the fish
ends up getting worse and or dies.

sorry, i forgot to reply to you!
usually i come on this group while at work (don't tell), i actually
don't get on my aol that often (at home). if my computer desk wasn't
such a mess, maybe i would! so IF i ever get on my computer at home i
would be able to take a picture, but i can't promise it'll be good
quality! the lighting in my little 1 gal tank sucks pretty bad.

He didn't have that "ring" before he got sucked, right....
I would think it's possibly a bruised area. The inside of the ring looks like
normal tissue (hard to make it out in the pic).
How's he doing now?
Has the ring changed at all or the tissue surrounding it, or inside of it?
How's his behavior?
Acting and swimming normal?

yeah, he's eating well, swimming around, acting normal. it appears as
though it could have taken off some scales, especially near his dorsal
fin. he's acting perfectly normal though, so i'm guessing that it
isn't bothering him any. next time i perform a water change/gravel
vac i'll take him out of the tank first! lesson learned!!

you don't have to do that, just keep your siphon tube against the bottom or
near it so he won't get sucked up again.... taking him out just stresses
him... remember, less stress is best...

but when i try to gravel vac it's really hard since it's a 1 gallon

If it's a 1g tank, the water should really be changed 100% weekly.
You don't need to be vacuuming the gravel, as it should be also cleaned as well
in that weekly cleaning.

I have Bettas in 2 gal tanks, use a turkey baster to remove lumpy bits, and
a small cup to take 90% of the water out each week. A small pinch of
aquarium salt added, plus a complete clean out with cold water each month
and they are healthy.
(one Betta to each tank) They don't seem to mind being in an ice cream
container, for 20 mins once a month. :-)

really? 100% weekly? but wouldn't that ruin the cycle? or isn't
there a cycle in a 1 gal tank. lol! i remember when i had a goldfish
in a bowl (years ago) i would scrub it out real good when i cleaned
it. then my mom would make me clean the sink and i don't wanna get in
that routine again! haha. i'm lazy... but if i'm supposed to be
changing 100% of the water weekly AND cleaning the gravel, then i
guess i will. this little tank also came with a "UGF" which consists
of a thingy on the bottom, a tube rising up, and an airstone in the
tube. now, is that a REAL UGF??? i haven't been turning on the air
filter lately because he probably likes it better with it off, plus
then i can see if he's making his own bubbles or not.

I had an over-agressive betta do this to me once. I only looked away
for an instant, but isn't that how things always go? Anyhow, apparently
he dediced he didn't like the siphon invading his space and attacked
it. He was sucked clear through into the bucket.
I don't know who freaked mre, him or me, but we both survive the
incident, though he did look a little ragged for a few days.

The bacteria that contribute to ammonia processing aren't so much in
the water as they are on every surface of the tank. A one gallon tank
probably isn't going to support a really robust ammonia cycle, but
there will be one.
> this little tank also came with a "UGF" which consists of a
> thingy on the bottom, a tube rising up, and an airstone in the

Sounds like it. Bear in mind that the only purpose of a UGF is to draw
water through the gravel, where all the bacteria are, so that the
ammonia can be processed. You should consider turning the air on so it
runs. Your betta will probably not like it initially (especially if
he's spent most of his life in stagnant conditions) but he'll get used
to it quickly. Just my opinion, but I think water with some movement is
better than totally still water.
As for the 100% water changes weekly, I don't normally like to disagree
with TYNK on anything (I consider her the resident expert on bettas in
this group) but on this I have to throw a caution flag. A 100% water
change can be a big shock to the fish, especially if the water is at a
different temperature.
So, some things to bear in mind - don't change all 100% at once, since
this means either the fish is high-and-dry, or he's been netted out to
another container. Neither is good for him. Better to change half, then
an hour later change half again. That won't be a 100% water change, of
course, but it'll be pretty close.
Also, any time you're going to be changing signifigant fractions of the
water volume, be certain that it's as close to the exact same
temperature as possible to minimize shock.
When I was keeping bettas in unheated one gallon tanks, I kept a couple
of one-gallon water jugs always prepared and sitting in the same room
so that the water temperature was exactly the same. I usually changed
half the water, twice a week. With a one-gallon tank water changes are
extremely simple, so this wasn't a big burden.

Wouldn't something like Amquel+ cut down on the need to do this? I have to
say when I had a tank as a young teenager (29 gal) I am not sure I ever
changed the water, just topped it off...had some live plants but not so
many. I had two large, beautiful angels, a betta and misc others. The
water must have been liquid rock as it's hard to start with and I just
topped it off as needed. The angels layed eggs at least once, maybe more,
so I have to think the fish were happy. Does the betta require more special
condition than the others? I don't mean to say I think this is the right
way to run a tank, but it seems the need to change so much water so
frequently in any tank is a little over the top? OK, OK I know if weren't
beneficial there probably wouldn't be so many experts recommending it...I
know, I know... but STILL!

No, not particularly. In fact, they're probably more hardy than many
species.

In a smaller tank, conditions can go south very quickly, so it pays to
take extra care to keep the water as healthy as possible. Larger, well
established tanks are much less prone to sudden changes in water
quality than a one-gallon betta tank.
So, the downside of the small tank is that they need more frequent
maintenance. The upside is that water changes in a one gallon tank are
absurdly simple.

some great replies, thanks!
now i'm thinking about getting a minibow 2.5 gal "aquarium kit". i
see it comes with a divider too. the thing is, i was going to get the
2.5 gal so my betta would have more room, but once i saw it had a
divider, i was like "oh! now i can get another male betta!!"
soooooo....what would YOU do? i think male bettas are beautiful and i
really would love to have another, but i don't want them to be cramped
up, although split in half that would be 1.25 gallons per side, so
that is a BIT of an upgrade from 1 gallon. my thought before i saw
that the minibow came with a divider was "ooo now i can get a friend
for Prism, like an ADF!". okay, so i'm HORRIBLE at making my own
decisions, so some help at what would be best, pleeeease? i'm
planning on going out tomorrow to get the kit and whatever else needed
and start cycling it. i'll take some gravel from the 1 gallon to get
it cycled nice and quick.
so, any advice/help/suggestions/comments/etc. is WELCOME!
TIA :)
(okay i tried to post this last night but it wouldn't let me...grrr.
so i'm out to get the minibow 2.5 today but comments on getting
another betta or just simply getting a "friend" for my betta, Prism,
are still up for grabs) :)

You've got a nice routine going, and being 2g tanks, it's sound perfect.
::wondering why you would use an empty ice cream container to hold them while
cleaning out the gravel::
The next time you empty a good sized mayo or pickle jar, clean it out well and
use it to hold them. I can't see that ice cream container holding up for too
many water changes. = )

Get the tank. = )
Even if you decide not to divide it, it's still a great Betta tank.
The only thing I would be concerned about (splitting it into two), would be the
males getting to each other. Either by jumping over the divider or squeezing
through the sides...either way would mean disaster.

the divider fits quite securely so i don't think that'll be a worry.
but the divider is see through, so wouldn't it stress out the bettas
because they would be flaring at each other 24/7? i tried to see if
you were on aol last night so i could bother you through IM, but
alas... :)

Hi there.
IM me anytime. = ) No prob at all.
Email's the same.
Bettas aren't going to flare them selves to death. = )
It's actually great exercise for them. It also keeps them from being too bored.
Within no time, they'll probably just ignore each other.
I've got some males that only flare at each other during feeding time or if I'm
looking in on them. (like competing siblings for Mom's attention) = )~
I even have males that become quite depressed if their flare buddy is removed.
(usually for cleaning and all it back to normal in a few).
Oh my goodness...once I switched them around (all my males) and this one got so
darned depressed about losing HIS flare buddy that he became lethargic,
wouldn't eat..nothing but blah. Next water change...a switch a roonie we go
again and he was back next to his old bud....WOW, back to life he came.
Everything was right with (his) world again.
Silly boys.

well i put him in the 2.5 gal just the other day. hopefully it wasn't
too early. i decided against getting another betta and puting the
divider in. he seems to enjoy the extra gallon and a half, so i won't
take that away from him. he's so cute! it seems like when i'm over
watching my 32 gal. he tries to get my attention because when i first
got him, i'd watch him all the time. hehe. are there any good tank
mates for male bettas? i though about an ADF, but i had searched and
read about bettas eating the frogs legs, or the frogs nipping at the
bettas, so i'm not sure if that's a good route to go...

Great decision for your little dude! He's got his own home.
Just let him have a good 20 minutes a day flaring at his reflection in a small
mirror.
When you are over at the other tank and he's flaring up a storm...he *is*
trying to get your attention. = )
Bettas are aware of their surroundings outside their tanks too. They quickly
learn who their owners and their family members are (folks in the home, not the
tank, hehe).
About ADF's, they're usually ok.
I've kept many AD frogs over the years with Bettas and have only had a few bad
experiences with them, but for the most part, it was fine.
Some may be nippy towards a Bettas fins, not because it's trying to attack it,
but because it's mistaking the fins for food.
I've had some that would only snap at red Bettas (I feed bright red frozen
Bloodworms to them). I've had one little frog snap at a different Betta during
feeding time and that Betta turned right around and gave him a good nip and the
evil eye, hehe.
The little bugger never snapped at him again.
Good tank mates for Bettas would depend on the individual Betta, as well as the
usual guidlines such as:
No fin nippers!
No Barbs.
No Tetras, except for a few types..Neons (making sure that they are larger and
not the smaller ones which would turn into expensive snacks), Cardinals (same
rule as for Neons), and.....oh >Subject: Re: betta sucked up in siphon!

Corys (Corydora cat fish)....Just make sure that it's one that will grow to a
proper size for the tank it is being considered for.
Some grow pretty large and some are as tiny as an inch (Pygmy Cories).
For your smaller tank, I would suggest either a few Pygmies (hard to find..you
also asked for them to be ordered and see what they say. Many shops an and do
order things for folks that they don't normally carry, but have access to.
Keep in mind Cories are schooling fish and need to be kept with others of it's
own kind, so size of the tank and amount of residents will matter.
In community tanks I have had over the years and current have included (with
Bettas), Platies, Pearl Gouramis (this is a more calm, gentle variety of
Gourami), Angelfish ( however this does depend on the size of the Angelfish,
the individual personalities of both the Angelfish and the Betta..some nip the
Angel and vice versa), Fancy Guppies...most will say NO WAY to that..however,
it all comes down to the individual personality of each Betta. Some males might
see a male fancy Gup as a rival male Betta..some ignore them completely.
I currently have a male in my 75g along with fancy Gups and he could less about
them.
In the past I have had males want to kill male Gups, and some that only went
after certain colored Gups..Yes, I have had more than one racist fish! I had
one male that would go after anything black...Black Mollies were his target and
also black Angelfish.
I had one male that only went after things that were the same royal blue as he
was...silly fish!
So there are many choices out there for tank mates, but your tank size does
limit you very much.

If you get a frog, make sure it really is an African Dwarf Frog, rather than
an African Clawed Frog. The Clawed Frog gets big and mine ate my betta (And
the other two fish in the tank before I could remove him or them).
Everything went fine for a while and then the frog just one day said, hey, I
think I'll eat all my tank mates.

I have once seen a betta in a tank with neons, angel fish and the like,
and that seemed to work fine. I would have called it a South America
tank, except for the betta ;-) But he did add a bit of splendor to the
tank no doubt!
