autotopoff stuck SG 1.004 TANK CRASH

my autotopoff stuck open dropped my sg from 1.024 to 1.004 in about 12
hours. Huge mess in the front room Fish lived however it looks like all of
my corals died. It has been two days and nothing is open Devils hand is
collapsed and small, green star poyls have not opened and the mushrooms are
still attached but not expanding like normal. All the inverts died.

Ammonia spike at 0.5 two days out
nitrites 0
nitrates 2.5
ph 8.2-8.4
temp 78-80
SG 1.024
Cal 400


Anyone have any experience in this? How long should I wait before I
consider this a complete loss.

You'd be suprised how much stuff will come back, don't get in a hurry to
dump everything. If you can tell for sure it's dead, remove it, otherwise
leave it alone for now. Just keep a close eye on your ammonia levels and be
prepared to do several water changes when they start to get high.

I agree with patience I had some soft corals that crashed when hurricane
Isabel went through and the stayed closed for 6 months or more. I cant
imagine how they could have lived that long. It took another few months
before they opened normally polyps normally 1 inch long were only nubs when
they finally decided to open

Ron, I'm sorry to read that. Odds are those corals can and
will recover.

If you had your auto top-off connected directly to your
RO/DI unit, please change that configuration immediately. I
always recommmend that an auto top-off be connected to a
limited water supply so that if something does go wrong, you
can control the worst-case senario better. With my 280g, I
evaporate about 3g per day. I have a 10g container filled
with fresh RO/DI water. This way if something goes wrong,
I'm only adding 10g of new water - this will not affect a
thing adversely.
