I have a small 2 gallon fish tank, previously there was 1 fish (all
goldfish) in a smaller tank. We got the 2 gallon along with 2 new
(smaller) goldfish.
Now they all swim abck and forth in the tank, from one end to the
other all day long, never stopping and they stay in a fairly tight
group. What is making them do this? I would guess they are schooling,
but only three fish going back and forth for no reason? I dont really
get it.
Any idea what theyre doing?

They're probably looking for a bigger tank.
Goldfish need at least 10 gallons each.

They're probably trying to breath.
Sorry, not trying to be nasty but a 2g tank with 2 Goldies in it isn't a good
thing. It would even be the cause of their deaths in no time.
Godlfish put out a great deal of waste and need a good filtration system going.
Usually the minimum tank space called for with Goldies is 10g per Goldfish.
However, most grow so large that I really have to go with a min of 15g per
Goldie. You can get away with the smaller (10g) when they're babies, but they
quickly outgrow that in no time.
Have you ever seen a fully mature fancy Goldfish? They're massive!
Heck, even the feeder Goldies grow to about 16 inches long.
So, one thing has to be done in your case...and that's that those Goldies need
a new home.
You can either get like a 29g or larger tank for them or call a local shop and
see if they'll take them (or back from the store that sold them to you for a 2g
tank).
I fully believe that some fish should come with warning labels and these are
one them. = /
