best? an octopus

i'll take the pistol shrimps. they're harmless and pretty interesting when
you can actually find them.

I have read that you put the rock into a shallow container of freshwater
then progressively add HOT water to it until the shrimp comes out or dies.
I'm sure this will kill off a lot of the algae/bacteria in the live rock as
well though.

man after that id use the safe and easy cure, put rock outside, sit inside
looking thru window as it drys :) then it can run after you all it wants.
course its dead rock now, but at least no mantis :)

big triggers/puffers and groupers will do the trick also, then there is what
do you do with the fish once the LR is clean, IMO start a new tank!!!

True, but you had better have a REALLY escape-proof tank. Bomb-proof.
If it isn't sealed up tight as a drum, the octo will find a way out.
They can eventually squeeze through any opening that is larger that
the width of their beak (the only "solid" part of their body).

Why do you want to get rid of pistol shrimp? they are harmless, they just make
noise.

The way I did it was to dip my rock into hyper-salinated water. I made a
bucket of water that was about 1.040 (or higher) salinity and dipped each
rock into the bucket. The shrimp tried to get out of the water, and
ended up in the bottom of the bucket. He shot right out of the rock
within seconds of dipping the rock. This also won't kill your coralline,
unless you leave the rocks in the water for a long period of time..

the only reason i would want to pull a questionalbe shrimp is for further
identification, the subject kinda vaguely leaves identification to your own
mind. i have really good luck when it comes to finding bad luck, and would
rather spend a small amout of time/effort knowing that that clicking noise
is a pistol instead of a mantis.
