View Full Version : Toxic Mold

I am currently running a fishroom in the basment, and the air is
pretty humid. I am from Canada, and the Winters make it extremely
expensive to keep open and still maintain the proper temperature in
the aquariums (not to mention a headache to regulate!).

I have a question concerning keeping 400 gallons worth of aquariums
running in one 10x12 room, and the possible instances of toxic mold.
I notice that over time, I have to clean a black film off the vinyl
flooring, and notice it on the walls as well, which I ensure to wipe
off as well. Just wondering if this could be toxic mold, and if
anyone else with a fishroom is finding the same 'blackness', and if it
is indeed mold or not.

I have been on the net, and I can't say I have found exactly the same
pics. I would really hate to shutdown the room, as it would mean just
keeping one tank running (currently breeding freshwater fish/keeping a
fish only marine tank with a BEAUTIFUL 4' Gymnothorax favagineus. I
would hate to have to pick and choose down to 1 tank!

Any info anyone can provide would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! With
today's heating costs and electricity bills, I would not be able to
keep the windows open or be able to run any de-humidifiers. I can
barely afford to keep what I have going!

Here in US I have seen some home tests for molds in
home improvement stores like Home Depot etc...
The test manufacturer claims it can tell if the "thing"
you are dealing is mold or not. I did not use it so I cannot
tell if this is good or bad just.

I think you had better do something about the humidity or you will have a
problem. You may not have that specific variety, but even more common forms
of mold can be a problem, and can cause wood and other materials to
decompose. Also, they cause respiratory problems for people, so who knows
that they do to fish and inverts.

I have a mold problem from water damage resulting from Francis, and the
Insurance company wants to rip out half of my interior walls and ceilings
and replace my insulation. They wouldn't want to spend this money if it
wasn't a real problem, and I haven't had any specific toxic mold species
problem.

I think you need to think of a way to run a dehumidifier, at least.
