View Full Version : Tank comes to life but ...

My new tank has been maturing nicely - ammonia peaked and dropped,
Nitrites soared and dropped (high = over 100ppm, now = 0.25 ppm and
falling steadily). As the levels of nasties have come down, a bit of
life has started to emerge from the live rock.

However, in the past few days, a dark brown growth has been developing
in the tank. It started by covering the tips of some inert (dead)
corel and small bubbles appeared clinging to it. It now seems to be
spreading onto the glass and the surface of the sand. Doesn't look
very "nice". Is this normal? Will a couple of algae eaters sort it out
once the tank is ready to receive fish?

I have also noticed patches (still quite small) of bright green growth
developing - looks really nice but again, would be interested in
whether this is normal.

Does anyone know of a good source of reference information (with
photos) so we can check out these kinds of growths independently?

Thanks

If its brown and wipes off easily its probably diatoms, this too will die
off, just be patient. The real fun starts when red or green algae knocks at
the door, hold on to your seats, you aint seen nuthin yet :)

Yes, it's normal. I asked similar questions and as hard as it was to
accept, it WILL go away... in time.
