I'm still here. :-)
I went to town (Pensacola) for the storm and the roof of the house
I was staying in came down in about 70% of the house, miserable
for the last week, no power, no water, no A/C yada yada still..
We were trapped in the neighborhood for 3 days, giant live oaks
down everywhere, roof tops and all the trash you could imagine.
We had to wait for the National Guard to cut us out. And a friking
huge gas leak geyser right next door.
I'm downtown at my shop and we have power here.
My house on the island Pensacola Beach (Santa Rosa Island)
was destroyed. The roof is blown apart and the garage is just gone.
They let us out on the island for a couple hours yesterday, ugggh
it's the definition of a disaster area, 100% property damage on the island!!
Had to bum a ladder to even get in the house. Everything in the house is trashed
and everything in the garage is just flat out gone, including a 1931 Ford roadster body
and parts and all my tools.
I'm purchasing the house under an unusual "homestead, lease to own" type deal with the landlords..
They keep the property insurance and I have the insurance on the contents.
ANY INSURANCE SAVVY GUYS HERE??
QUESTION:
I have a USAA "Renter" type policy.
I have the contents insured for $40,600....
With a total loss (except kitchen utensils and washer & dryer still there undamaged)
will they just cut me a check for the insured amount or is it general practice to go through
and itemize all individual items in the whole household?? I just want to know what to be
prepared for.. heck I don't have receipts for most of the stuff I have accumulated over the years.
And the garage is flat out gone without a trace. I did see the tip of the roadster body sticking out of
the sand a few blocks away.
And most all my tools and hotrod parts I've gotten at swap meets. So no proof...
Any info will be appreciated.
The Vette weathered the storm just fine in the garage where I stayed in town. :-)
The reef tank is just barely visible under the roofing debris and it was solid green,
couldn't even see through the water. :-(
Wow, sorry to hear your misfortune. I am not sure what I am going to do with that kind of disaster that you just faced. Hope everything going ok after this.

I'm glad to hear you and your family came through ok.
I have a guy at work that used to be insurance agent for 10yrs before he got sick
of sitting in an office, I'll print Your info out and ask him for an opinion.
I do have a Ques. for ya.
The wife and I have been talking alot about moving down south and the recent series of
Hurricanes has us wondering how would we handle it?
Please do not take this the wrong way,
Now I'm a lineman so I'd have to stick around to help get things up, but I told the wife
"We would pack the truck, you & the kids would head North With the pets, the Galaxie
and my bike. I'll follow with the boat, the tank and anything else that we feel can't replace."
As far as work goes I'm shure they would give me a few days before the 18hr shifts kick in
after the storm to secure my family, If not? Tuff I'll be back in a few days.
Now My Ques.
Why didn't you take the cars and the tank with you or ship the contents of the
tank to somebody?
Please don't take this Ques. as being bashed

Hey, insurance companies will resort to any low blow to avoid paying claims.
My EX company claims we canceled our coverage the beginning of the month
that my teenage daughter had her baby. Yeah, RIGHT.

I'm sorry to hear you lost so much.
I was in pretty serious car accident 2 months ago and had to hire an
attorney just to handle the insurance companies. The other guy was
100% at fault and had no insurance. Now both my auto and health
insurance are playing nasty games. They started out talking nice and
were ready to start writing out checks for the small stuff but quickly
started playing games.
Like someone else has said, make copies of everything you send to
them. They will lose it. Maybe a couple of times. My auto insurance
did.
Good luck.

Ok I talked to my buddy.
Now he delt mainly in health and life but said you should be ok providing you don't have a
fly by night comp.
They will prob. want to do some kind of walk-thru to assess the major stuff but other than that
you should be ok. They are not going to expect receipts since no one really saves them.
He did say he hopes you have an appraisal for the car. If you don't, that ones going to get
sticky unless you have it under your auto policy for a set value verified by them.
Lastly he doubts if they will cover the livestock in your tank :(
I hope this helps you some and good luck

Just had to make priorities, but I understand the question.
And you never really know how these will turn out in the end.
It's hard to find help with the heavy stuff when everyone else
in the whole area is taking care of their own stuff also.

Hi Ric,
Well, I asked you in the other thread how things are going,
only to find the bad news in the Ivan thread. When will you
start the Jeanne thread? *sigh*
With your insurance claim, you'll get your insured property
amount minus your deductible.
One good method to prove ownership is to shoot a video of
all your property, and make a couple of copies of that
video. Give one to your insurance company to keep on file,
put one in a safe deposit box, and put one safely in your
home somewhere. With this method, you do need to update the
information video a few times a year. Digital pictures
burned to CDs would be a good alternative. Try to get
pictures of the serial numbers too, as those are important
in the case of theft.
