After I got some live rock, I began seeing small brown tubelike amimals with
tentacles on the end not attched to the rock. The fish store told me they were
brown anemones. I had quite a few, but since getting some red legged hermit
crabs the numbers have been reduced substantially. Is this just coincidence or
will the crabs eat them?

Hermits will eat nearly anything under the right circumstances, IME.
<g> Just be very sure that what you have are indeed "brown anenomes"
(juvenile tube-worms) and not Aiptasia. Do a search on google for
both, Aiptasia are a scourge, I just eradicated some myself, so did
quite a bit of reading, being my first time having them.
