In the afternoon the light hits my betta's tank in just the right way to
cause a reflection. He loves to flare & display for himself. Today I was
watching him and he started chasing his tail (trying to get the "other"
fish, I guess). Unfortunately, he caught himself, bit off a small frond of
his fins & promptly consumed it! He's a well fed fish and I was amazed by
his behaviour. He has quite long, beautiful fins... for now.

Hello Jaqui.
Some Bettas become tail biters.
This is highly dreaded by Betta fanciers, as it just ruins their beauty.
Some may only do it once...same situation as yours, some become constant
biters...to the point of biting until he can't reach any more fin.
He'll end up looking like a female, or a short finned Plakat.
One of my prettiest Crowntails I've had decided after almost a year of having
him, that he thought it would be a great idea to shred himself up one day.
His lovely, very long spikes and most of his tail were gone. Every time a
little fin would regenerate, he's nip it right off. = (
Hopefully with your male it's one time thing.
If not, try putting him in a community tank with non nipping fish.
He won't be so bored and may decide there's much better things to do than self
mutilate.

That's good to know - I thought it was a one off kind of thing. Gee, maybe
I'll have to set up a community tank just for him. Now, where to put it
:-)
