Swordtails can have fry every 30 days or so - I believe the same is true for
Platys... Maybe someone else here knows gestation...

Hiya

My female platy had a small fry about 2 weeks ago and only one
survived (my new record) I was just wondering about my female because
she now looks very large and I am pretty sure she is pregnant and I
need to know when she will "drop", so I can put her in a breeding
trap. If someone could help me out and tell me what a few "pre-labour"
signs are it would really help! I have also heard a breeding trap
stress the fish, is this true? (She is a sunset platy if that would
help)

Thanks

Paul

One of mine had fry 16 days apart, she looked big until the second fry were
born and then very slim. I believe every 30 days is "normal", but my
experiance has been very different. My sunset platy clearly showed her
gravid spot for days before she had them. I never move my females as about 7
or 8 fry always make it!! I have 17 fry at 2 different ages and more due
anyday now.

the easiest to recognize sign is when her water breaks

That's priceless! You made me smile, in spite of being at work :-)
