Make your own divider?

I once thought about making some sort of plastic square frame that would
allow me to weave a mesh made from nylon thread. Or maybe sew together a
patchwork of large aquarium nets? You can also buy clear plastic tank
dividers with many tiny holes created in them to allow water flow.

I've got a couple of pictures here of a tank I divided for my bettas. I
used mesh plastic canvas that you can get from any decent hobby store
(it's used for needlework of some sort), and plastic report binders. It
isn't extremely attractive, but it is a really cheap way to divide a
tank.

I am trying to start line breeding my guppies so I can have the most
exquisite guppies in the town! I have a spare, clean, empty two foot
tank in my room that I would like to put my guppies in. However I need
to seperate the males and females so that no "unwanted mistakes" would
happen. I was thinking of using a divider so that they would be
seperated but they could still observe each other. The only problem is
I am on a tight budget and cannot afford to buy more tanks, so if
someone could give me some info on how to make your own dividers it
would help! I have also thought about the problems that occour with
the water circulation so I shall put two corner filters in each of the
sides.

Interesting thought. I'm not sure about Guppies, but results may vary
when separating fish to prevent spawning. Fish milt floats in the water
and could potentially impregnate the females. I know cichlids will spawn
through separators, but external egg fertilization (oviparous) is much
easier compared to the fertilization livebearers use (ovoviviparous, in
case you wanted to research it). It's probably not a problem, but if you
see any fry, you will know what happened.

If you go to Guppy association sites
(http://www.deltaguppies.com/links.htm has lots of URLs), follow the
links to fish-rooms. This will give you lots of ideas on how to separate
them. At the very least, you can always keep your females upstream of the
males ;~).
