One of my black neon tetras, a big one, had what looked like a small
abrasion on its side. Now, maybe a week later, that abrasion is like a
white smudge, a little fluffy looking. No other marks or strange behavior.
Other fish look OK. Easy to identify? I don't have a quarantine tank, so
can something like this be treated in a 55g tank with other inhabitants
around?

thanks,

SOunds like a physical injury that has gotten a fungus as well.
Treating the entire tank would be rough with standard cures.

I put some red slate from my back yard (saw the same stuff in a fishstore)
in the tank awhile back. Now I see some red spots on a dwarf gourami
(posted a pic before) and now it has a red rash near it's mouth. I wonder
if these fish are cutting themselves on the two upright pieces I have in
there? I tried to knock off the sharpest edges, but they are by no means
smooth surfaces.
