View Full Version : cory cat ?

I have had the same albino cory cats for some years now. A few years
ago one of my cory's lost both of its eyes to I think was an attack from
another fish. I removed the fish in question and the cory is still with
me today. He is blind but that does not seem to hold him back. This
morning one more of the albinos has lost an eye. So now two of my 8
albinos is blind. I have two other species of corys in the same tank
and their other compatible roomies. The only thing I can think of is
that he got to close to the loaches and his eye got stuck by a barb, or
this is a genetic thing with the albinos. I would like some other ideas
on this tho, as it has me baffled.

They live in a planted tank with:
skunk cory's
panda cory's
clown loaches
orange fin blue botia
keyhole cichlids
festivum cichlids
angelfish
a female bushy nose pleco
and the latest roomies (March) discus
The only aggression in the tank is one angel against the other and even
then, it is very moderate. Like I said the albino cory's have been in
the tank for over three years and besides yesterdays cory with the
missing eye, only one other cory is blind, and that was two years ago.
It could be just one of them things, but I have to make sure.

Blindness can occur for no apparent reason, but it sounded to me like the
cory had it removed somehow. If that's the case then the culprit is most
likely one of the other tank inhabitants. As a general rule, the corys and
the pleco didn't do it. Probably the cichlids, however I have heard stories
that botia's can be rather vicious at times.
It most likely is 'just one of those things' - maybe the cory got too close
to a territory and it just happened.. Who knows..

I am beginning to think it was one of the botia's too. They are not
aggressive towards the other fish but do scrap with each other for time
to time. I wonder if it happened at night when I drop in algae wafers
for them and the pleco. It could be that the two blues were fighting
over a wafer and the poor cory was stuck in the middle. I would agree
that my cichlids could do something like this but why wait this long to
start? The cichlids I have are all (except the two angels) the
sweethearts of the cichlid world and are only slightly aggressive during
the spawn (which is not happening now) so I don't think it was any of
them.
Thank you again for your input here.

I had this situation with an angel fish once, who had lost eyesight due
to unknown causes (possibly violent interaction with his tank mates). As
the fish could not find food I had to put him down. Shame, as he was
part of a breeding pair...

Why wouldn't you simply hand feed it. They can sense/smell the food. I would
used an eye dropper (the larger type that are found at most pharmacies for
liquid medications), to feed it directly.

He would panic at any movement near him. Also, in a situation like this,
it is probably kinder to make an end, even though this is the most
unpleasant chore of the hobby.
