while i have the aquarium light on, it reads about 82 degrees
Fahrenheit, but when i wake up before turning on the light it's
probably about 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Should i worry about this big
change in temperature? i'm sure it happens gradually but it still
seems like quite a big change if you ask me. i have 1 male betta
housed in it....no heater.

A seven degree temp change every 12 hours is going to stress the
fish. Id try reducing the lighting, or chaging to a light that
doesn't produce so much heat, I'm going to assume it's incandescent
right now.

The acceptable industry standard is 3F temperature change per 24 hours.
Changing to a flourescent lamp may not change anything if the ballast is
in the base (the ballast generates heat). You can improve the
ventilation (let air get in under the lid and out), or do not have the
lamp on as much (ie: timer). Keep in mind that unless you have natural
plants, any lighting above room ambient is really for you and not the
fish. With their big eyes and their normally 'dirtier' water in natural
conditions, they see fine with very little light, so leaving the light
off and a window shade/curtains open is more than enough.

thanks netmax. maybe i'll just turn on the light during feedings.
that's a helpful idea.
