Are rust stains toxic or bad in some other way?

I won't go into too much detail about my plumbing, but I used a steel
rod to hold something straight while the glue dried, and now I have
some rust stains on the inside of a piece of vinyl tubing. The tubing
is similar to that used for airline tubing, just a little wider, and
the rust stain is about 1/8 inch wide and 2 inches long.

It's really hard to get to the spot to clean it, and I don't want to
have to redo this whole piece again, so anyone know if this kind of
rust stain is bad? Would it prove toxic or will it simply add some
extra iron to my tank?

Not a problem. Heck, iron oxide's about as non-reactive as things get Even if
some comes off the piping, it won't have any effect on the tank (for good or for
ill).

It is toxic, but with all things it is a matter of dose. Remember that
iron oxide is much more soluble than iron, after all that is why rust is
such bad news, it enables metal to just wash away. Getting back to the
original query, unless your tank is very small or you are going to put a
lot of such tubing in place I suspect it will simply serve to help
provide iron to your plants.

You can have a significant amount of rusting iron in an aquarium with no
effect on the fish. When tanks were made of iron frames, the tops used
to crumble into the water.
