View Full Version : what killed my guppy?

55 gallon tank with a mix of real and plastic plants, water parameters all
within acceptable levels
Tank inhabitants include:
2 neon tetras
4 white clouds
1 platy
4 male guppies
4 female guppies
2 golden algae eaters
2 cheery shrimp
2 red nose shrimp
2 ghost shrimp
The guppy that died was chewed up pretty good, which makes me suspect that
it wasn't from natural causes. None of the fish appear to be aggressive.
I'm going to get a replacement guppy tomorrow since it was my favorite one
(a blonde red eyes).
Any ideas as to what killed the guppy?

Do you mean the guppy was mauled before it died? If so then the oly
possible culprits would be the algae eaters. If it was mauled after it
died then those shrimp are simply doing what they do.

I agree.
Also, it's quite possible that it simply died of old age, and then the Shrimps
had a clean up jub to do...you're actually lucky to find anything left with
that nays shrimp and algae eaters.
I wonder, are Golden algae eaters jkust a color morph of the Chinese Algae
eater? If so...they're nasty.

As soon as a fish is dead, it is fish food. Even non-aggressive fish
will start picking at it. So, unless you can pin point when the
mauling begin, you have no data.
Actually, the most likely killer is probably you. (Yes, that was a
cheap shot and I am so ashamed. (^_^;)
