Hiya

I have posted a few massages on this forum and I asked : How do I know
when my pregnant female platy is about to "drop" or have her babies?
All the people who replied said that the easyist way to tell is when
her water breaks. So my question is : How do you tell when the platy's
water breaks?

Thanks

Paul

They were joking... as she is a sunset platy, you should be able to see her
gravid spot, the darker it is the nearer she is. The gravid spot is just
before her lower fins where she poos. There is no easy way to tell though, a
good water change may help (20percent), or she may hide for a couple of days
before. But, as I said before, you may see none of these signs. If she is
keen to eat everyday , and then a little slower to join in, she could have
started to have them. If you are determined to move her to a breeding trap
you may find nothing after a couple of weeks, put her back and then, she has
them!!! I'm watching one of mine now, she's enormous, but so busy in the
tank with the others,so it won't be today. Be Patient.

Paul,

Sorry about all the jokes (ie: water breaking). Platies and all livebearers
are just so easy to breed. When you see their belly swell and swell really
big, it's about time. Then once you see her slender again, but if you don't
see any babies in the tank, either they got eaten or they are hiding, but
this is when you need to go mark your calendar, to then catch her and put
her into a breeding box/tank in 25 days so you can catch/protect the babies.

I agree with Paul, put them in a quarantine tank now. It is easier to
either save or destroy the fry. Changing tanks can induce delivery.
If you plan to save the fry start figuring what you will do with them.
Six months from now you will have a population explosion. I love live
bearers, but am now faced with over population and have separated the
fish by sex. No more hanky panky if I can prevent it.

ROTFLMAO almost spilt my coffee

To Paul, if you can distinguish the eyes of the fry through the gravid
spot, it will be very soon.
