After 6 months, I finally got my ponds water crystal clear. You could
see the entire bottom (4 feet deep) like it was drinking water.
Then, I get the bright idea to have my Japanese Maple removed as it
was too close to the pond.
I shut off my filter and go about the business of digging out the
Maple.
I go eat lunch...fish are still swimming around just fine.
THEN....I turn back on the filter and waterfall. WOOPS, I didn't
realize that if no pressure was going in, fish poop comes out! Forgot
to backflush the filter. My yard stunk like sulphur as my pond
proceeded to have clouds of waste dumped in via my filter and
waterfall.
Did a 25% water change, but the damage may have already been done. I
should know tomorrow if I still have a live pond, or fish fertilizer
for the plants.
Hope I saved someone the experience. I know now that I will always
backflush after having the filter off for any extended length of time.
