Hiya
I recently bought a couple of plants and put them in my tank and went
away on holiday for a few days. Apon my return I found maybe 5 or 10
snails that had never been there before. I took them all out and a few
weeks later I had another million. How should I stop this from
happening again? I assume that the snails came in with the plants I
bought and made home in my 55 gallon tank. How can I peremanantly get
rid of these annoying things, or are they worth keeping.
Thanks
Paul

Clown loaches love snails. They decimated my snail population in a
couple of days. You have to buy more than a couple though as they like
company.
In another aquarium, the whole snail population died over a week for no
apparent reason. Something not related to snail removal which I added
must have had an adverse effect on them.

Depending on what fish you have, and what size tank you have, I would
get 3 or 4 clown loaches. Or, depending on what fish you have, you can
just add some salt, not sure if that would work though. If you do use
salt, DONT USE TABLE SALT. Use only aquarium salt.
Hope this works out.

I love my snails. Every once in awhile I simply squish the ones I can
reach against the glass. Makes a little snack for the fish, and keeps the
population from going nuts.

question: would the clown loaches eat larger snails about 1" - 1.5"
long?
I wouldn't mind them eating the newborn snails, but I keep the larger
ones as part of the community (have about 8 of them in a 100gal).
I've had them for almost 2 years.
how large do clown loaches get?
thanks

What kind of snails are they?
Although many snails may be pests, some of them are benefitial. MTS are
usually a prefered snail.
Just something to think about.

Try something smaller like Botia lohachata, the YoYo loach:

They won't bother larger snails, but you won't get any babies either.
I'm thinking of getting a few adult ramshorns simply to provide some
live food for ours. We had snails once, haven't seen one in years.

Add my middle initial to email me. It has become attached to a country
Most snail medications contain copper, which will kill most of the
microscopic life, and even some fish, in your aquarium. I've had to
re-cycle a tank because of this.
Loaches can become addictive, and require a somewhat special tank to be
really happy. I once bought a clown loach to take care of this problem,
and enden up building a full 'river tank' devoted to my loaches.
I find it that having a few snails is beneficial. Snails are the only
way I could get rid of an epystilis infestation.
To get rid of the extra snails, specially the hundreds of babies, I
just put a small shot glass sideways on the substrate in my livebearers
tank, with a pleco pellet or piece of lettuce in it. In a few hours the
snails find it, and I just remove the shot glass full of snails to feed
the loaches.

I have the opposite problem. I bought 3 apple snails, feed them some
frozen Broccoli, and they all looked about to die. The damn cheap ass
frozen veggie probably have pesticide to kill snails. Maybe you can
try what I did (^_^;

Try some yoyo loaches. short of poisoning the tank and killing all of the
plants, it hard to get rid of snails.

If you have bottom feeders, try a piece of cucumber.
