View Full Version : Cleaning Seaclone

I have a Seaclone 100 on the 75, and I've been fairly happy with it
despite the bad rap any skimmer that cost less than 500 bucks seem to
get. Anyhey, the efficiency is plummeting due to algae and general
gorp buildup inside, and I'd like tips from other owners on how to
clean the inside of this unit.

Bottle brushes of various sizes. A toilet brush works for the outermost
tube. If you are asking for a cleaning solution, about 30% vinegar water
works great.

Its not just any skimmer under $500 that gets a bad rap, i'm using a
euroreef CS8-2, got it for ~450 new, and the Remoras get good review
too, I think they are less than $300. There are also a few other
euroreefs in that price range (CS6-2 and the new E series).

The difference between the seaclone and the euroreef is like night and day.

I don't see a way to remove the inner tube without destroying the
O-ring. What am I missing?

I have the same unit, I couldn't find a way either to remove it.

Take the o-ring out first. Then remove the inner tube.
Unfortunatelly, there is other, smaller tube inside,
to about half hight - I would be glad to remove this one
for cleaning, but it looks like it is glued to the base.

Got a good reply on RF. Soak unit in hot water. O-ring will come out.
Inner tube slides right out.

I agree. I wasn't able to clean that area very well, despite a rather
good assortment of cleaning brushes on hand. It works well, but I do
hope to acquire a better skimmer at some point, though I'm unlikely
to be able to afford the ones that keep being recommended to me.
($400 and up). Adding more exotic and sensitive critters is,
therefore, on hold for the time being.

What size tank are you using it on? You should be able to
find a used skimmer & pump to save some money. Matter of
fact, I bought my first skimmer in this group several years
ago, and every one since then was used.

Skimmers don't go bad, and pumps can be replaced. As long
as the skimmer isn't cracked or broken, you'll be just as
happy with it as a brand new one. You can clean them up by
soaking them in hot water and vinegar overnight.

75usg with 20g sump. What skimmer would you recommend, marc? Good
balance between cost, ease of use and efficiency? Remora?

On a 75, I'd use a Remora Pro, or if you want one in sump,
the Urchin Pro or the EV-120. All of those are made by Aqua
C, and if you watch Ebay and the For Sale areas they do come up.

The O ring comes out easily. I just roll my finger over it with some
pressure and it rolls up and out. I do it all the time

Mine wouldn't budge until after a good soak in warm water.

Strange..... Maybe try to pry it out with a sharp knife point. Just be
careful that you don't damage it or you might have a hard time getting a new
one

Thought of that, but the warm water soak did the trick. Going to try
a few of the mods I've read about on the 'net for this thing.
