There is a strange growth that looks like a small strip of algae, and
is dark green in color. Normally I can see it on fins or attached to
fins or near the mouth or gills. What is this? The fins are still
complete and intact so I don't think its fin-rot, and definitely not
ich.

One sunset variatus died this morning so I did a 30% water change and
I have isolated all the fish that has them (all sunset variatus, and a
couple of sailfin mollies). One fish looks hard hit and even has a red
bump (looks like a pimple that just popped). It seems the outbreak
just happened this week when the weather here became a bit cold.

I am thinking of using methylene blue, maybe salt, but would like to
be sure what it is first.

Thanks for any tips,
eric

Meth Blue is for fungus....
Doesn't sound to me like what you're seeing is fungus.

No idea what it is, might be some sort of bacteria. Since the mollies
will tolerate it well I would go for salt in the first incidence.

Yes, even going as far as doing a salt dip (brine and stroke the sides to
remove the growths - research this for more details).
