View Full Version : 10gal starter tank,1 GF, question re; charcoal

I have one goldfish now about 11 cm or 4+inches. I've had him since he
was 1 inch long. Just moved him to a 10 gal tank from a 1˝ gal tank.
Well,
he's pretty happy with his new digs and he looks like he's getting
bigger each time I look over there at him! (plenty of elbow er, fin
room now :)
My question is, since he's the only guy in this tank, how often do I
really need to change the Aqua-Tech EZ-Change filter?
Once a week seems too often to me if I change my 20% water each week.
I remember a long time ago,
I used to put my own charcoal into a mesh bag and put that in the
power filter.
Thanks for the help.

Goldfish produce a ton of waste so i suggest @ least a weekly change
to keep him healthy and happy.

there are usually two main filters. the gross filter which catches particulates.
this can be rinsed off once a week, then there are the biofilters which are not
rinsed unless the water flow is slowing.
change water often enough to keep the nitrATES at or below 20 ppm..
forget teh charcoal

Thanks for the responses,
My fish is really enjoying this new tank and I want to keep the water
as clear as it is today. In the past, the clarity of the tank/water
just seemed to degrade little by little. As reported earlier, I have
one 4" goldfish in a standard 10 gallon tank. The tank is located in a
medium bright room and I run the tank lights around 3-6 hours a day.
How can I keep the water sparkling like it is now?
Do I need to bother with getting a testing kit or can I rinse the
filter and change 20% of the water each week and I do not overfeed my
fish.

How much water does your filter pass an hour? I'd go for something that can
deal with 80-100gallons per hour.

10 gallon tanks are tricky but a filter rated for a 20 gallon tank like a whisper and
no gravel should do it. leave the algae on the back and sides and heat the tank to
76oF. shouldnt be any problem at all. DONT OVERFEED and feed high protein, high
quality food very little of it. change water to keep nitrates at or below 20 ppm.

Aren't Regent filters the same as Penquins, but without the
biowheel? My swag (scientific wild-assed guess) is that
"5-15" means they recommend it for tanks under 15 gallons,
which means it's probably rated at 100gph, like the Penquin
"mini."

go by what size tank it is rated for... and double the filtration for the tank. so
one rated for a 20 gallon on a 10, a 40 gallon filter on a 20 gallon.tank, etc. and
use 2 filters on larger tanks. Ingrid

Thanks Gunther and Ingrid for the help.
I have not purchased a heater yet but will get one soon.
The ambient temp now is around 77°.
I'll follow your advice.
I feed once a day usually and give about ˝ thimble full of Wardley® GF
flakes and occasionally, Tetra® Bloodworms.
