I prefer natural. Lots of bogwood, rocks. Clay pots are as artificial
as I go.

I too am a naturalist in this area. Rocks, natural colored gravel and live
plants. The only artificial things I have are the necessary stuff like pump
water return spouts and overflow drains (Heating and areation are taken care
of in the sump and out of sight.)

All natural as well.

Unless you have small children in the house who insist on a treasure chest
or a sunken ship I find them cheesy and totally distracting form the main
attraction- fish and plants..

First I consider my plants as decorations. However, I have put local
rocks I thought were interesting. I built caves of the rocks in the
past. All of my tanks were "used" and ordered via the internet.
Several came with interesting ornaments. One ten gallon tank I
actually bid on just because of the ornament. It is a ceramic "Mill
House" with moving water wheel driven by air. It occupies about 2/3
the length of the tank and is very colorful. The built in caverns
serve as headquarters for 2 Clown Loaches in the tank.

I tend to like natural coloured gravel, live plants and wood. I also
have some larger sized river rock in my show tank too. Now my
daughter's tank has blue/purple/pink gravel and lots of other little
decorations which she will change out from time to time.

I do have a large sunken ship that I used to keep in the tank some time
ago. The fish liked it because it offered a dark cave for them to hide
in but now it sits on the shelf above the tank.

My tanks are heavily planted and decorations
include bogwood, but I also have some fake
decorations like caves which I find the bottom
fish (mostly what I have) like to rest under.

Does anyone use household items like a clay pot or something like that
for fish to swim thru or hide in?

I've been thinking of getting some large PVC parts and using those to build
condos for the GF. I've got a Pagoda which the small Goldfish love to sleep
in, but it's WAY too small for the big boys. In fact the big GF have begun
pushing it around if they think it's in the way. The PVC won't have any
sharp edges and I don't have to worry about the heavy metals that might be
in clay pots. I can always get some aquarium safe silicon and cover the PVC
in stones.

In my planted tank, the fish are the decorations :)

Like most of the replies so far I prefer the natural look, with live
plants, stones and driftwood. My betta tank is by necessity somewhat
barren, with just plain black gravel and a few fake plants.

I have to admit, though, I kind of like some of the 'ruins' decorations
that are available, with the fallen castle / Roman column look. If I
had a few more tanks, I probably would outfit one in that kind of
stuff, just because it would appeal to my over-developed sense of
whimsey.

Plastic, silk and real plants. I hope that one day the real plants
will make the artificical plants unnecessary. I want a very heavily
planted look in my tanks.

We have a variety of styles. My divided 10-gallon (male betta on one side,
female on the other) is the "ruins of Atlantis" with the Greek columns and
such. My catfish-and-guppy tank is "Oklahoma farm pond" - gravel bottom with
a pile of broken bricks and a half-buried tire - the cats love to hide in
both. Both of my tanks are planted. My spouse prefers a more artificial
look, with brightly-colored marbles and fake plants. I have extra
maintenance keeping the plants under control, she has to do more frequent
water changes. Bottom line - go with what you think you'll enjoy looking at
and / or maintaining.

There's a later thread in this ng about the pros and cons of lava rock. I
have used lava rocks in a plastic mesh as a sort of bio filter, but not
where the fish can get at them.
