Hi, My 6 year old reef, has gotten a bad slime problem lately, since I
added a sump and changed proein skimmers. I had a hard time getting the
skimmer dialed in. I have added my Remora Pro back to the system to try
to get things under control. I have added a UV sterilizer. I have done
several water changes with water from my TWP (tap water purifier with a
new cartridge). Added carbon to the sump. Changed my flourescent and
metal halide bulbs; started adding kalkwasser as a drip for top off
water, rather than plain water; increased water flow; Siphoned it out,
etc, etc, etc.
I read that Maracyn has been used to treat it, without harming the good
bacteria.
I did not want to do this, bt it is killing everything. I can not
siphon this junk out fast enough.
Please any info. would be great.
Will post tank parameters later today, I have all new test kits and plan
to test everything this afternoon, after a nap. (I work nights and just
got off work)
Thanks,
Eizabeth

I just beat a pretty bad case in a 2 year old reef. For about two months, I
dusted if off the LR and siphoned it from the LS and an hour later, you
could see small patches on the sand. In a day or two most of the visible
sand bed would have a decent layer of slime on it. So I finally dosed red
slime remover, http://www.ultralifedirect.com/red_slime_remover.htm. I used
this product years ago when I first started this tank as a fish only and it
worked great. I didn't want to use any "medications" on the reef, but I
decided I had to get rid of the slime. It's been a week now and I don't see
any slime on the sand, rocks, glass, or anywhere and all livestock seem to
be unaffected. You do have to shut down the skimmer and remove the carbon
for 48 hours. Then I did a 10% WC and turned the skimmer back on.
Hopefully it's gone for good! Good luck with yours...

I'll back the ultra life red slime remover, works like a charm and doesn't
harm anything. Maricyn will have a good chance of killing more than just
your slime. To use the RSR, I dosed twice (once, then again 3 days later)and
did a 25% water change after a weeks time of starting the "treatment." I
gravel vacuumed during the water change to get all the "dead" red slime out.
I bought it from

I've used Chemi Clean by Boyd Industries with good results.
Follow the directions.

Can cyano bacteria also be a yellowish brown slime? Because that is mainly
what I have and I have been scooping it out for months ( ever since
hurricane Isabel cut my power off for a few days last year). It will even
smother the caulerpa if I don't pull it off.

Humm.. Rod beat me to it. Late reply.
To get rid of slime, will need high water flow / current should fix the
problem.... especially dead spot.
