Thinking of selling and was wondering what my tank is worth:
DAS 115 Gallon
4 110 watt vho lights
15 watt aquanetics in line quartz UV sterilizer
powerheads
auto topoff valve
digital thermometer
135 lbs of live rock
10" wide brain coral
6" bubble coral
6 head purple tip frogspawn
medium rasta leather
XXL show neon green finger coral (fingers about 8" tall and about 25
of them) base 10" wide)
deep sea orange gorgonian
pink polyps
5" rock with neon green polyps
some xenia
3" cup coral
5" yellow/neon green cup coral
neon green purple tip bubble tip anemone
3 leathers about 2.5" wide
orange stylaster coral
medium lettuce coral
2 3" wide califlower corals
(2) 2" yellow tangs
6 line wrasse
green chromis
(2) azure damsels
3.5" maroon clown
4.5" hippo tang

Mike, it is pretty tough to sell used setups and get a decent amount of money.
You might aim for $1500, but probably would sell it for $1000.
Parting it out might end up making about the same.
Are you quitting the hobby, or upgrading?

I guess you could say that I am upgrading... We are moving from
Dallas to Hawaii in January/February.
At least now I wont have to do water changes!

My grandfather used to say... something is *worth* what you can get someone
else to pay for it! Sounds like a really nice setup you have there..

check out the completed auctions on ebay. most complete setups (no
fish) go for a fraction of their retail cost.

Don't always be so quick to give your setup away so cheap. People in this
group are more in tune to the used value of the equipment, but someone not
as experienced may not know. We all know how much cheaper items can be
purchased from the Internet Sites/Catalogs...often at prices 50% cheaper
than the local LFS. The person buying your tank may not be aware of the
insane markups that many LFS work on and see the price you want as a huge
bargain. Case in point, I sold a used 55 Gallon (tank/stand/light/canopy)
with a Fluval canister, the gravel and decorations (fake plants/lava rock)
with the fish for a total of $400. I had paid only $199 for the tank setup
alone about 7 years prior. I took care of the tank and it was real pretty,
but still could not believe the money I got. When people see a good looking
tank, complete, it can be very tempting! Mind you, I can still find the
same tank setup for $199 at certain stores even today!
Parting out your tank may prove worthy as well. I have sold used equipment
on ebay that I could only shake my head in bewilderment at the price I got.
I have even sold a few items for more than I paid or could easily be found
new on-line for less, if not the same. At the same time, I have scored
myself on used items on eBay that were given away way too cheap by people
under estimating the value of a product. I think my best aquaria score was
a Lifereef skimmer than I picked up for less than half the price of a new
one and the condition was practically like out of the box.
Anyway, based on the above and my experiences, I would calculate what it
would cost to buy what you have locally and try listing it on ebay (if you
haven't already) for local sale and pickup only. Don't be afraid to start
fairly close to its value, maybe even higher. After all, its up and running
(with fish), cycled and really all the work is done. That in itself creates
additional value to people.
As a final point, I have noticed on ebay that tanks shown complete/up and
running bring more money than tanks displayed broken down, empty and dirty.
It definitely makes a difference.
Good luck!
give it to me help a fellow reefer out please

Mike, if you are still reading this newsgroup, try advertising this setup on
DFWMAS.com's message board. The For Sale/Trade area is very active, and stuff
sells relatively quickly. Except for the 900g tank, that is... but it is rather
expensive.
