View Full Version : 82 degrees F ok?

Hi All,
I finally put a thermometer on the side of the tank and it came in at 82 F.
I don't have a heater in the tank, just the powerheads and canister filters.
Is that ok or should I look into something to cool it down? I've been
reading through the threads and it looks like I'm supposed to have the tank
at 78 F.
I have three more fish in the tank now to make 6 orandas in a 125 gallon
tank (which should do it..).
Thanks,
Brian

Lucky fish to have all that room. They ought to thrive.
Where do you live that it stays that warm?
82F is on the high end, but it won't kill them. You probably should
add some aeration -- warm water holds less O2, so you need to replenish.
That will also help cool it a bit.
Chillers are expensive, but I don't think you need it unless it
gets over 84 for extended periods.

Hi Gunther,
I live in Glendale, AZ. We keep the house at 78 F or so, but the tank seems
to stay at 82 F. I'll take your advice and add more air to the powerheads.
The problem I run into when I do that is the tank filling up with bubbles.
The fish seem to love it, but it makes it harder to see them =)

yup. aeration is essential. you can always open the cover and put a fan blowing
over the top. INgrid

Hi Brian,
82 is a bit on the high side, but not too bad. As others have said,
make sure that you have plenty of water movement. If possible put in
a couple of powerheads and direct them towards the surface. This will
bring up water from the bottom of the tank to the surface where the
oxygen exchange will happen. I'd also recommend that you have
something breaking the surface of the water, either an external
filter or aerator. This will also help the o2 exchange.

powerheads produce strong current, not good for fancy slow GF.
air stones 1 inch off the bottom, produce excellent bottom to top current that is
gentle and the air output by the stones is superb at aerating the water all along the
path of the bubbles. the smaller bubbles, the better exchange.

Hi Ingrid,
I took out the powerheads and put in two airstones with the units that power
them. I'm not sure if that will be enough or not, but I'll let it run
through the day and see how it works out. Each airstone is 10" long and the
pumps are Penn-Plax AirTech 2K4.
Hopefully that will help with the "tank filling up with bubbles problem" as
well.
Thanks =)

Ingrid brings up a good point about water flow with slow fish. I
haven't kept goldfish in years and had forgot about the affect on
water currents on some of the fish.

10 INCH!!! wowowo. yeah, that is over the top. but you will find fancy GF hanging
right next to airstones when they rest. it moves the ammonia they are blowing off
away from them. Ingrid

Over the top for what it needs to do, but can be quite pretty to look at
and fishies can play in it.

They do seem to love the bubbles and play in them throughout the day. I
didn't realize those airstones were large, but figured they were good for
the fish as I've read about the need for oxygen in the groups. The nice
part is that they don't fill up the whole tank with bubbles like the
powerheads, so the water stays crystal clear.

So you're saying my 48" bubble wall is too much power! :) GF seem kind of
indifferent about it, although I guess they do hang out fairly close to it.

Definitely underpowered. :)
What are you using for an air pump BTW? I find that connecting the pump to
one end of the wall results in unven boiling. So I was going to get two
smaller pumps and connect one to each end of the wall. The Optima is too
damn noisy anyway!

if the pump has two outlets connect one of the outlets to each end of the bubbler and
the bubbling will be even. Ingrid

Couldn't be any worse than the Optima. I have it dialed down to low to make
it bearable. Un/fortunately it only has one outlet, so I'll look for
something (x2) quieter. I bought a Tetratec DW18 for the pond's icehole,
which doesn't seem too loud. But I haven't checked the output yet.

Actually, for what it is, the Tetratec isn't bad.
It just takes moving it about to find the optimum position.
