Hello,
I have 2 tanks. One is a 30 gallon, the other is a 75. I have better luck
with the 30, but there are some things that are going on in there that I'm
pretty sure are bad. When I first set it up almost a year ago I took a
picture of an unknown object that was identified by some kind folks in here
as a manajoe anenome. They told me to kill it, but I didn't. It was only
about 3/8th's of an inch in diameter at that time. It's now about 5 inches
in diameter. It hasn't moved or multiplied, and it looks good. The only
problem I have with it is that it has chased away some really nice mushrooms
that have been thriving on the same rock.
In the 30 I also have some red and brown worms, bristle worms I'm assuming.
I see about 3 or 4 of them, they've each got their own little territories.
They're probably 3 inches long when they strech out for food. Do I need to
irradicate them too?
I had a couple of peppermint shrimp in there at one time. They have died
off, but left behind a whole bunch of little ones. I figured they'd die off
too because I didn't know how to care for them, but they've been there for
about a month and a half now and there are still quite a few. They aren't
growing very quickly, but they do eat the food I put in there. Should I do
anything about them?
I have a nice frogspawn in the 30 that looks really nice and has grown much
bigger than it was when I bought it. Isn't it supposed to grow new heads
eventually? I've had it for about 8 months now and it's still just 2 heads.
In the 75 I have some purple strands growing off one of the pieces of rock.
I'd love to know what it is and if it's good or bad. I also have little
clusters of green bubbles, and little patches of tube like grass that's
about half an inch long. I'm guessing that all that stuff is bad.
If you have a moment, please go to my web site and go to the Aquarium photo
album and see if you can help me out here.
Thanks,
PeptoJoe

You might try looking at my ID page as well to identify some
of your livestock.
I doubt your Anemonia Majano is one at all. Odds are it is
a Rock Anemone or Flower Anemone.

Marc, yours is the first place I went to ID stuff. I love your site! It
was helpful, and I do believe I know what some of it is. There is some more
stuff that I'm unsure about, and even the stuff I think I know about I would
like to get an expert's opinion on. I'm such a rookie, I don't want to do
anything stupid. Also, I didn't see the purple strands on your page. I did
see some sponges that I have, glad to see they're harmless.
So I guess I'm glad I didn't kill that majano, manjoe, manajo, whatever the
heck it isn't! It is pretty, but what do I do about the mushrooms it has
chased away??
Any suggestions on the baby shrimp? (They are not pods, I'm sure of that..
they are obviously shrimp.. they look just like their parents!)
Thanks again,

I've never heard of a Majano that is "about 5 inches in
diameter." That is why I believe it is a rock anemone. Or
maybe he simply has a BTA.

Due to chemical warfare, mushrooms and other corals will not
share the same space. One of them will yield, or die.
I've not had time to look at your site yet, but if you'll
keep reminding me here I'll get to it. :p

BAH, I agree, if that is a flower anemone I will eat it. They look nothing like that. I
think maybe we are all ASSUMING it is an anemone, when it may just be one of the Rodactis
mushroom corals.
WHAT THE HECK IS THIS
Are those "wormy structures" soft like tentacles, hard or paper like. To me they look like
a parchment or calcareous tube spaghetti worms, as they look branched, one of the feather
dusters. Does anything like a duster come out of the tips ? Sometimes these worms plague
the tank, their population density gets so high.
Yes, their are 3 kinds of "spaghetti worms" . One is a Terebellidae, aka Medusa Worm
/Spaghetti Worm and the other two Sabellidae, one of the parchment tube worms and
Surpulidae one of the calcareous tube worms.
Here is an example

Thanks for your reply. These are a softer type of thing with no feather
dusters coming out. I was thinking they were some kind of plant type thing.
Does algae ever grow in this form? It's about the feel of an aldente
spaghetti noodle, but I don't think it's a spaghetti worm. :-)
And for now, they are only on one rock. They've been there for several
months, and they've gotten bigger and a bit more dense, but haven't spread.
Thanks again,

Yes Joe there are some algae's like that. It is really hard to tell from the picture, need
a better one or lets say a close-up. But the way this one looks is really wormy looking
but doesn't mean it is a worm. Some of the Jania algae look like this. If that is what it
is it maybe growing lanky and long due to inadequate light or nutrients, like house plants
often due do

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. I went ahead and took a close up
picture of that purple stuff and added it to the site. It's almost
translucent. My tank temp is a little high, and I think the stuff might
actually be thinning out a little bit now. It's hard to say.
Another thing I wonder about.. I have a white rock about the size of a
softball and a half side by side with tiny dimples all over it. It was
brown at one time, but I guess it died off. I was told it was called a
"worm rock", but all the worms were gone when it was given to me. Ever hear
of such a thing?? Anyway, there is one little spot on it that looks like a
little cave with a shiny purple cap on it. It's almost metallic looking,
and it lives, whatever it is. It's got little claws or something, but it's
only about a quarter of an inch around. It never moves out of the rock, and
it's facing the back of the tank so it's hard to get a picture of it. I may
try to pick it up and move it just to get a pic, and then I'll post it on my
site with the rest.
Thanks again,

It is one of the red algae's. One would need a hand sample to ID it.
Worm rock, yes it is quite common this hobby. It is, it is usually a Porites coral with
feather duster worms or just a Live rock with feather dusters. Since it was brown and now
is white, I will bet it was a Porites coral, which alive is brown and often turns white
when it is dead or bleached out. A life piece with the coral and dusters worms is in the
link below

I would have to see it but it sounds like a barnacle
