View Full Version : What happened in my tank last night??

Toni
October 17th 04, 02:32 PM
I checked my tank yesterday at around 2 PM and everything was fine. I had
just done a water change of 20% the day before, and everyone ate well and
looked normal.

I walked into the room at 6 PM and it looked as though a fog machine went
off in my tank!
The water was super cloudy- no visible particulate matter, just very, very
cloudy- foggy looking.

I looked at each and every coral, fish, and invert but could see no reason
for anything. Even the super picky toadstool leather looked expanded and
happy. Nothing new has been added to this system in months.

My skimmer had filled with a clear skimmate, and there was a bit of gooey
looking substance floating on top of the skimmate.
I ran some quick tests- SG 1.026, Nitrates 0, calcium 500, alk 4.0 meq/L
11.2 dKH, temps 81ºF. Same as always.

As the lights were about to go off I hooked up a diatom filter to clear the
water and left it for the night.

This AM everything is A-OK. Water is clear, everything tests the same,
skimmer has not refilled, and no dead creatures. There is a smell in the
room, though- a oceany smell. Not putrid like skimmate- just sort of
seaweedy. The reef room has never smelled this strongly before.

Should I just assume that something spawned??
I'm running carbon right now, but honestly everything looks fine.

See more tank specs and a stocklist http://www.cearbhaill.com/reef.htm

This is my first major "event" and I need to know what happened- should I be
worried? Do another water change?

How long did you wait between making the salt water and adding it to the
tank? Should usually wait a couple days.

Yes- I always do.
It was circulating in a can for well over 2 days- I remember only because I
intended to do the change on Thursday but was delayed a day.

Did a powerhead shift location and stir up all the fine silt?

Do you have Caulerpa? Might have gone sexual.
Did your pump suck air?

Kalk dosing? if not either a spawn or maybe a bacteria bloom

It could be your anemone spawned, or perhaps a clam. Here
are some pictures when my BTA spawned.

Do you use tap water or RO/DI water? It could be a
bacterial bloom, as this happened to me recently with a
quickly-set-up quarantine tank.

This tank has only ever seen RO/DI water.
Guess I will never know who did it- everything is fine now. It looked a
whole lot like your photos.

My Astrae snails used to spawn after a water change and they turned the tank milky.

Sounds like someone got real happy in there. I've had bristle worms in
my tank all pop out at once and start shootin gobs of goo into the tank.
Turned it milky for a while. Just consider it a feeding frenzy for your
filter feeders...............

yeah- I skipped the DT's/Cyclopeeze for a while there.
Guess I will never know just *who* did it.
