View Full Version : Plant oxygen production

One of my Echinodorus has sprung a gas leak. In the photo below it is
possible to see a stream of bubbles leaving the middle of the leaf. This
started happening after I fully opened the blinds to let the sun in.
Could be a coincidence though. An angefish was also cleaning off the leaf.

What is happening? I didn't know plant oxygen production could actually
be witnessed!

I never believed it myself but that's what people say, and it's the best
explanation I can think of. Congratulations! Healthy photosynthesis in
your plants reflects well on your plantkeeping skill.

Hey Nikki,
Perfectly normal if you have the right amount of light, carbon dioxide, and
nutrients that the plant needs.
I have several plants in my tank and there is a constant stream of very
small bubbles that come from both of my Water Sprite plants, an ocassional
bubble that will come from my Red Ludwigia plants, and some also from the
Anacharis plants.
Sounds like you don't do anything extra, but I inject Co2 into my tank.
Also, by opening the blinds, is the aquarium getting direct sunlight? If
so, it won't be long before an algae bloom is going to take over your tank
so just be careful.

Last time I saw that I was living on the Equator. I actually tried to
put a test tube over the plant to collect the gas. I think I got a
quarter of a tube.

Nikki,
Many plants will produce o2 with proper amount of light and nutrients.
This is called pearling.
Some plants that do this frequently are
anacharis
Ricca
Pontamegeton perfolatus as well as many others.
The increase in lighting did this along with enough macro and micro
nutrients in the water.

By the look of it, I don't think it is pearling. These continuous
streams of bubbles are more likely to be due to slight tissue damage
to the leaf. In true pearling individual bubbles form on the
underside of the leaf. I read an interesting post on this over at
plant geeks or somewhere. I have observed both types of bubble
formation on my plants.

Maybe this is O2 that would have diffused across the leaf, pearling, if
it wasn't for damage that allowed an easier route for the gas to escape?

OK, I just started with CO2 and my plants are now chucking it out.
They're all fizzing and popping.

It's all very fascinating and new to me.

That does not look like an anubias but possibly some type of sword.
Anubias leaves you connot see through like that.

Yes, the LFS assistants we're quarreling between themselves when I asked
for the name of the newly purchased plant.
I'm beginning to think it is Saururus cernuus or Lizard's tongue.

OK, let's give that a 2nd try:
