Hi. Please help me. My Platy has been ill for a few days now. It was
resting at the bottom of the tank. I couldn't see any physical signs.
I checked all my levels - I even took them to the fish shop for a
second opinion - they are fine. I put him in isolation yesterday and
today he seems to be fitting. He's been lying on his side. His pooh is
large (much wider then normal) and bright white. Is this a bladder
infection or a parasite? Might it spread to the other fish. I'm really
worried - Please help me - thanks Emma

white pooh, hmm could be an internal bacterial infection - can you get medicated
food? Keep his/her water in tip top condition in the meantime.

Hi Thanx - too late though - I lost the Platy - if it was an internal
bacterial infection will it spread to the other fish? What can I do.

Sorry for your loss Emma. This could have been internal
parasites(nematodes)and they can spread to healthy fish if they eat
at the carcass of the dead fish.
White poo can also be a symptom for bloat and dropsy. With these the
fish will have a swollen belly, protruding scales that give a
'pinecone' appearance, reddening of the vent and reddening of the
base of the fins. Fish can also go off of their food, show a
darkening of color, pale gills and have a pop-eyed appearence. Fluid
can also accumulate in the body cavity.
With internal parasites fish will normally have long stringy poo and
sometimes the worms can be seen hanging out of the vent of the fish.
The fish will give look grossly thin and emaciated. The reason why
the fish look so thin is because the worms live in the intestine,
using up any nutrients that the fish may take in, preventing the fish
from using them.
Treament for them can be difficult, especially if fish go off their
food, and depending on the parasite involved. The fish can be treated
with anthelmintics, these medications are prepared in the fish's food
before treatment. Two drugs that can be used for treating internal
parasites in this manner are Levasimole and Praziquantel.

I sure would do a series of water changes pulling as much from the
bottom as possible. I would do daily changes for at least a week. I
don't like using medications as most are dilute poisons, but water
changes are safe and improve the water quality. Healthy fish can
fight off many illnesses just by being healthy. (not an expert, just
my sense of what I would do)

Thanks Dick
Sounded sensible to me too. So far everybody else in the tank seems
fit and well. Hopefully it didn't spread. I'll keep an eye on them
though! Emma
