All my preperations for one of our biggest fears....the power
outage...were put to the test today. The power was out for nearly an
hour, and everything fired right back up the way it should. Sorry,
just had to share:)

One hour power outage is not a big deal... and a reef tank can
probably survive even longer pretty easily...
But it is always better you are prepared for something much longer.
For something like recently in Florida, where repair crews were
fixing houses one by one and people did not have electricity
for days/weeks... Of course, there are probably much more serious
problems than your fish tank then... but anyway.
One hour power outage is not a big of a deal for a reef tank.

.... and this is the *serious* issue I was talking about.
An outage lasting an hour is nothing compared to this.
Good luck, Ric!

Hey congrats Billy! What type of setup do you have to handle power
outages? I'm still in preparatory stages setting up a 10 gal nanoreef
and have considered using a UPS for the heater (or a low wattage
backup) only if a power outage occurs.

UPS is not very good idea - expensive and short lasting...
It usually has very small battery.
Try to use a "basement sump-pump backup" available in hardware stores
or wire a larger system yourself much cheaper using one large marine 12V
battery, 12VDC-120AC inverter and one relay with the coil controller from the
120AC supply. It will not work exactly like UPS, but small interruption in power
for the relay to kick in - danger for computer data - is no problem for a fish tank.
It is pretty easy to understand how it works and to wire it up yourself. Good luck!

True! I have a battery back-up airstone that will keep a tiny bit of
circulation going, and it worked. I call this a successful test-run,
making me feel better about more serious situations.
