View Full Version : Multitest SEACHEM - storage, expiration date

I have problem with two sets of test by SEACHEM.
Iodide, Silicate tests do not work even on a reference sample.
They do not have any expiration date on the box, so I have no
idea if they are old or still fresh and I am doing something wrong.

Does anybody know what is the allowed storage period for them?
Have you contacted SEACHEM in regards to tests exchange based
on the fact they do not work on a reference sample?

I know it is not a milion dollar purchase, but I hate to spend
my hard earned money on something completely useless, belonging
to the garbagge. They are purchased online, so there is no
point of sending them back - the shipping will cost more...
I want SEACHEM to take responsibility for incorrectly or not
marking expiration date at all, or making tests which do not work.

In general, most manufacturers recommend replacing test kits one year after
initial use....

However, I will have to look at my seachem tests to see how they are
labeled..

So they do not start go bad until opened?
I do not see any air-tight seal on the bottles...

I am affraid water will evaporate slowly or dye will
react with the air when stored for years on the shelf.

I have thrown away the box to my seachem test. I am fairly certain that the
expiry date was printed on the box. I always write the day I put a test kit
into service on one of the bottles. I also never buy a test kit if the
expiration date is not at least a year past my first day of service. They do
not have infinite shelf lives either.
The last test kit I purchase this month had an expiration date in 2005.

Where is the expiration date printed on your box?

The most recent kit was not a seachem test. I am still in search mode as far
as finding my favorite test methods.. Have been for over 10 years..

Perhaps you should ask the source. Email them at . They
have always been helpful to me...

I am very pleased to inform you that Seachem explained to me
that they intentionaly do not put expiration date on their test.
They find this to be ineffective indication the test is good or not.
It should normaly work for 3-5 years, but its life can be shortened.
Validity of the test depends of the way it is stored (frozen on
the store shipping deck? overheated in summer in the hot cabin?)
and the only way to know the test is still working for sure is to run
a test on a reference sample. They offered to replace test also.
Very good custommer service - I like the way this company works :-)
