hello again folks
I know I post on here an awful lot, and I'm sorry, but it all seems to be
going wrong at the mo.

My favourite fish has what looks like a pale grey fluff, similar to
household dust, in little clumps, all over him. It's happened fast as he
was fine a couple of hours ago.

It doesn't look like anything described in my usual sources of help. Its
not White like fungus, its all over his body and tail and its not threads
like columnaris.

He's also flashing, and so are the others although they don't seem to have
anything on them

If I knew what it was I'd be a lot happier, at least I could treat it then!

Okay its now 2 hours later and 2 more fish have the stuff all over them.
Its beginning to look a bit stringy now like dirty grey cobweb.

start doing water changes right away... in fact, move your fish to a bucket of fresh
water there is something very toxic in your water and their slime coats are stripping
off. BE SURE TO DROP IN AN AIRSTONE. drain your tank completely, replace with
fresh treated water and move the fish back in. Ingrid

I concur with ingrid, get stringy cobweb like is definitely slime coat
stripping. Do as ingrid suggested and add a teaspoon of salt per gallon to
the tank (dissolved) - this will help the slimecoat recover

Its done, he looks a bit better today.
I hope he survives this, he's my absolute favourite.

Whilst I was cleaning the tank, I decided to get rid of the gravel, it looks
quite nice and the fish dont seem to mind at all.

Did you ever find out what caused this problem?

It would be good to know, so the rest of us can avoid a similar problem.

I'm really not sure. The day before the fish got sick, I used a standard
ammonia remover liquid from the aqua store. I dont know if this poisoned
them or not, I was extremely careful calculating the dose.

I do a 30% water change every 2 days, so, although I didnt have an ammonia
kit, I'm fairly certain that ammonia wasnt too high. I now have a kit and I
tested the water, the ammonia level was zero.

I've heard a PH crash can cause the slime coat to start stripping away, my
PH is around 7, which I understand is okay for GF (7 to 7.5 I believe).

Anyway after a complate water change, cleaning of all ornaments and putting
fresh treated water and a little salt in, they all seem fine, and Twix, the
really bad one, is making a good recovery now I've isolated him.

The only thing I can think of is the ammonia neutraliser, its the only thing
I've done differently.
Its "Safe Water" by King British. It claims to be "a blend of natural
bacteris which quickly degrades ammonia and nitrite, and boosts the
processing power of bio filters".

That's a lot of water changes. Do you have a water quality problem,
Nitrates, Ammonia, Nitrite? Does your water have Chlorine/Chloramine? Does
your 'Safe Water' treat for these? If your water is OK, I probably wouldn't
change water so often, just more chances for something to go wrong. Depends
on your filtering to though. I know I'm always fighting the Nitrates. (I
probably feed them too much.)

Mine is around 7.4 as well. What's the PH of your tap water compared to your
tank? Make sure your PH and temp of the tap water are close to that of the
tank when doing changes. (I imagine you know this).

New development

Now the fish is beginning to lose the cobwebby look, I've noticed small
"gold dust" dots on his body, near the base of his dorsal fin and a little
on his sides, Could this be oodinium (velvet disease)? I've read it can
affect the slime coat.

yes. oodinium. treat with Quick cure. every other day for 3 treatments.
QC, heat and high salts (greater than 0.1%) do not mix.
velvet is best seen with flashlight at night.

Okay I've started to treat him, he's in isolation, so should I treat the big
tank too? No more signs of slime or gold dust there but they are flashing
occasionally.
