View Full Version : re: consequences in overstock

Hi,

I read this thread carefully and I'm very concerned about my overstock. I
have 10 small fancy GF, 8 are in a 20gal (American gallons) tank and 2 are
in my 6 gallon quarantine tank.

I know I've done wrong! But I simply did not realise at the time I started
out, my book said 1 gallon per inch of fish excluding tailfins, I have since
thrown the book away.

Right, I'm on benefits and I got the tank from my boyfriend who was
upgrading. I figure I could afford another 20gallon tank in a months time.

I can only bear to part with 4 of my fish, so I am looking for good homes
for them, which will leave me with 6 fish, 3 each in the two 20gallon tanks.

If I add an extra filter and change the water very often (I plan to test the
water each day) Will my fish be able to enjoy a good quality of life until I
can afford a 3rd tank? (this will take about a year after garage sales and
depriving myself of art supplies).

I was reading Tom Puskars posting "nitrates" and he seems to have it under
control.

Sorry for such a long posting!
Tess

My advice: Don't read it too carefully.

<< I know I've done wrong! >>

Many times, no doubt.

<< But I simply did not realise at the time I started

....was very weird!

Mine, too, diappeared,
But I have no idea
Where it went, or how.

Me too.

My outdoor goldfish are in plastic stocktanks and
do fine. I've used plastic containers (20 gallon) as
temporary (about 2 months) holding tanks for my
tropical (indoor) fish while changing the setup.
That could be a possible solution for you in the
short term - use a plastic container or 2. I use the
Sterlite containers that can be found easily and are
fairly cheap. They sides are steeper (greater
depth) than a standard aquarium, but I found
filter intake tube extensions at Petsmart that
work fine.

Racoon,

You could get more filters which will help deal with the ammonia and nitrite (by
having good bio bacteria colonise the media) but your nitrates will always be a
problem
and it will get worse as they grow. Can you not get one of those BIG plastic
dustbin type
containers and put your fish in there?
My only other suggestion is to look on ebay for a bargain!

I have been scouring EBay, I sell jewellery there so I'm always rummaging
around for fishy stuff. Havent turned anything up yet. I might get extra
filtration and keep testing for nitrates, doing lots of water changes.

I could get a plastic storage container with a lid, the type you get from
B&Q, I guess, this would be good temporarily, but its gonna be a while and I
wont see my babies properly :(

But I guess youre right, having them healthy is more important than a pretty
tank with ornaments.

Hi Ozz! :)

I donated 4 of my babies to my local LFS now, sad though it was its a good
liitle store and both the men who own it keep fancy goldies and they take
very strict views on not selling GF to people with goldfish bowls.

I now have 6 left, so will need 1 x 60gal tank or 2 x 30gal lol, lucky xmas
is on the way!
