View Full Version : I trashed my 55 Gallon Tank

Yesterday I replaced the dirty canister in my 350 Magnum filter with a
clean canister that I had soaked overnight in a soulution of 1 part
chlorox to 3 parts water. I rinsed off the chlorox soaked canister
before putting it in the filter. I thought that rinsing off the
canister would sufficient making it safe to put it in the filter and
then reconnect the filter filter to my 55 gallon tank
I was wrong in my above assumption with respect to safely reconnecting
the filter. Several hours later I found that almost all my fish in the
tank were dead. Apparently residual bleach that was still on the filter
got into the tank and poisoned most of the fish (Ultimately a mini Cory
Catfish that I had for twelve years died!).
To get bleach out of the tank I did a two thirds water change and
replaced the canister in the Magnum 350 filter with the charcoal holder
(I put Ammo-Carb in the holder.).
My two Blue Gouramis and one of the Cory Catfish survived the accident.
I'll wait about two weeks to restock the tank just to be sure that
remaining fish are ok.
OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the rare occasion that I soak a filter part in a bleach solution,
I rinse it with the determination of a madman. I rinse and rinse and

Then I rinse again. Then I let it dry, and rinse again breifly before
use. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I've had no sad experiences like
yours...yet....

I have extra cartridges. When I need to soak one in Clorox, I take
the one that is in the Clorox and put it into a container with
saturated sodium thyosulfate. the one that was in the sodium
thyosulfate then gets rinsed and is read for use. A strong dechlor
would work as well.

Ever heard of dechlorinator?

My first question is why did you feel the need to bleach your filter pad?
All you needed to do was unhook the magnum. Take it to the kitchen sink, or
whatever sink you're using, remove all the insides and set aside all without
dumping the water that is in the canister.
Take the filter pad and squish it over and over until most of the debris is
left in the water.
Set pad aside. Now dump the water, refill with fresh water, add dechlorinator
(!!) in that water, put the filter back together.
That's all you need to do to clean it. Do it this way until the pad is falling
aprt. Then buy a new one.
My second question is why didn't you add dechlorinator to the canister, or
anything that was bleached? It would have taken care of any residual bleach.
Once the bleach is detoxified in the tank by doing a water change and adding a
little extra dechlor, you really don't need to wait a couple weeks to add new
fish.
What a sad situation you got yourself in.
Sorry for you. = (

No, Billy. You're not being paranoid.
You're doing it exactly right. = )

Yeah,
When you bleach things such as that, you need to put in a HUGE amount of
dechlorinator to get rid of all of it.
In addition to that, it might be a good idea to partially fill a bathtub up
or a big cooler or something (also with lots of dechlor) and let the filter
run on it for a few hours.
This should really help.

Don't forget too that if you had enough bleach to kill the fish, you have
probably killed all the bacteria and you are now back to an uncycled
tank.....
