We have a 1200 gallon pond shaped as a half donut, the pump flow rate is
1000 gph at the filter. How important is it to have the pump and filter on
opposite sides of the pond?

Placing the pump at the furthest point from the filter return causes the
clean water to enter and mix with the old water and force it and some of the
bottom debris to flow around to the pump. Placing the pump right at the
waterfall or other discharge recirculates only the clean water leaving some
stagnant. As for the location of the filter, it can be anywhere. Mine are
in my garden shed, nearest the skimmers and bottom drains with long runs
back to the discharge locations.

I had the pump adn filter return on opposite sides of the pond. With the
water flow in a straight line back to the pump all the plants hovered in the
area of the pump. I solved this by simply pointing the filter return away
from the pump. They're still on opposite sides, but this seems to allow the
plants to spread out a bit.
