View Full Version : Walmart 55 gallon aquarium

I plan on getting a 55 gallon (glass) tank from Walmart. Someone told me
that the Whisper filter that comes with the tank is not a good filter to
use. Can any one tell me what a good hang on the back type filter would be
to get. Thanks for any advice.

I'm not fond of the whispers simply because I find maintenance to be
messy. If it's a Whisper 60, it would likely be fine. Anything
smaller would be inadequate for a 55. If you're going to do straight
fish, a Whisper or Penguin power filter would be fine. For planted
tanks, I prefer canister filters.

I only plan on using artificial, silk plants and some river rocks, besides
the gravel.

I like the AquaClear filters. Aside from the flow control, you can mix and
match what types of filter media you want to use in them to customize it to
your needs. In my 55, I use the AquaClear 70...but I'm planning on
switching to a canister in the near future because my tank is planted.
Since we're kind of on the subject, anyone want to suggest a good canister?

Then the Whisper, assuming it's the 60, should be just fine for your
needs.

In my experience, the WalMart/AllGlass 55 kit comes with a Marineland
filter, a Penguin 330 without the biowheels and the media baskets.

I think it varies by region. The ones here come with Whisper as well,
and the store stockes only Whisper filters and parts.

Ditto on the AquaClear. I have an AC500 on my 55 + two penguins on the RUGF.

I have a pair of Fluval 304s on my 75. I like them, but make sure you get
the latest revision, as they have really improved the retaining clips. If
cash is no object then go for Eheim.

I would highly recommend getting a Penguin 330 filter. This provides 330
gph flow and also has two bio-wheels that will harbor good bacteria to
remove materials from the water.
I purchased a 55 gallon from a guy I work with and bought the Penguin 330
online. I think some people provided me links where this filter can be
purchased for around $20 or so.
With the bio-wheels, you will be able to have much more of a fish load in
the water because more bacteria will grow on the bio-wheels allowing the
bacteria to be in constant contact with water and air which increases the
amount of disolved materials in the water to be removed.

I have a Penguin 330 filter on a 55, I have one on a 40. I I Used to
have a canister on the 55 with the Penguin 330 filter. Now that I have
ran it alone for months on the 55. there seems top be a problem. I'm
going back to use both. I love the media baskets in the 330, but in my
55 it seems as if the filter needs to bin the the middle which I can't
out it there, I ahve it on one side an toeh rother side seems to be
still and stagnent. So I'm going to add something to the other side. Now
this is a tank with tropical fish, for goldfish, I try and have double
or triple the filtration.

| Just curious, as I have a 40 gallon planted tank, why do you want a
| cannister over the other type filter because of a planted tank?
| --
My personal reason is I don't feel that canister filters are as good
at biological filtration as other types. In a planted tank, the
plants take up the slack, converting nitrogen to oxtgen. However,
canisters are quiet, they don't take up a huge amount of space, (you
can hide the canister under the tank, and the hoses take up very
little room) and they're easy to maintain.

I just checked out the Penguin 330 filter on the net and I like what it
said: leak proof, 1 piece body, only 1 moving part, and no O-rings to fail.

I run two whisper 30-60's on my 55g and am quite happy with the results.
I can't comment on a canister filter because I have never tried one, old
school I guess. Just make sure you do plenty of water changes.

Aw, that's harsh. Luminos is a good guy who contributes to the NG,
and everyone has their moments. I only use my ban-list for career
trolls and spammers. Others, I just don't read thier posts until I
realize I'm not mad at them anymore. <g>

More recently they have been selling them with a "bio-filter" which is just
a plate that goes in front of the filter cartrige (Not the bio-wheel penguin
also offered by marineland). It also has a marineland heater
(hang-on-the-back) that looks *quite* similar to their "visi-therm"
submersible ones... but I'm not sure if it would function if you did
submerge it...
heater looks like this one but with a shorter switch at the top:

(don't have a pic of the one included in the walmart package though)

I have been in the NG for a few years now, and to make fun of someone or
call them names for typos is silly.
I do have to admit something to someone else. I guess would be better in
a new thread.

Wow, I only thought that could happen in the interior of stars!
What markets are they testing the Mr Fusion devices in? Do they run on
banana peels, just like in Back To The Future?
