Can any one tell me the pros or cons on the 3-D backgrounds that you mount
on the inside of your aquarium. I think they look good, but don't know if
they are a pain to use. Do they get in the way of your filters or heaters, I
would think that you could not mount your heater in the rear of the tank.
Thanks for any advice.

I suppose you could argue that it takes up x% of fish swimming space.

I had the juwel 3D background in my aquarium for a couple of months, but
there was a problem with the batch that mine came from and it shrank, that
problem has been corrected by juwel. but I did have to remove mine.
I would fit another one though, if it didn't mean draining my tank. when
they are fitted the give a look of a true background for the aquarium,
rather than a photo of plants and rocks, which I think gives a fake feel to
everything.
the juwel 3D background comes out from the back by about half an inch, so
you do loose a little space.

I'd second Scott's comments. The Juwel background is pricey for what
it is, but it is neutral and blends realistically into any tank set
up you wish to make. I would imagine that the more elaborate 3D
backgrounds (which are more expensive still) which simulate submerged
roots or rock faces or whatever are kind of restrictive.
The half-inch of real depth that you lose with Juwel is more than
compensated for by the illusion of greater depth that it creates.

I have a Back To Nature background (you can see it here:
http://mikes-machine.mine.nu/aquaria/160/whole_tank_23-05-03DSCN4422.jpg
)
and I am very happy with it. I've had it for two years, and it's not
changed at all in that time. The one disadvantage is that one does
lose some space, as the background is 3D, but on the other hand I've
placed my pumps behind the background.
OK, two disadvantages, very small fish occasionally find their way
behind the background, god knows how, and they're difficult to catch
because it's so cramped.
Other than that, I consider the $200 that background cost me to be the
best money I spent on the tank. The background really, truly, made all
the difference.

Mean_Chlorine, That is a beautiful background. How to you fix it, to the
inside back of your tank, do you have to silicone it in place. Do you have a
link to where I can check that background out at. I will be getting a 55
gallon tank from Wal-Mart sometime before Xmas but I am going to wait till
spring to set it up, so I have time to get everything together.

Yes, it is siliconed to the sides and bottom of the aquarium.
The manufacturers homepage is:
http://www.on-the-rocks.se/english/index.html
You can see their whole line of products under "assortment". My
background is a "Rocky".
