View Full Version : Fiddler Crabs

I have googled Fiddler crabs on the net and am geting different
information, such as the land/water needs. Some say they need access to
land and water, some say water only.

As far as I know there are Gold Fiddler Crabs.

Another question would be salt. Some say they need brackish water, some
say freshwater only.

My husband brought home a pair of fiddler crabs. Normally I research any
animal I want to keep. So I am abit frazzled. I put them in a cycled 10
gallon with plants, I lowered the level so they can climb on a cave if
they need to be out of the water. I sealed the top so they don't climb
the airhose and out of the tank.

The ph is 7.6 gh 11
The temp is 78
But at this moment I have no salt. So if they need it should it be sea
salt such as Instant Ocean? Or Rock salt/Aquarium salt?

If they need salt is 1 teaspoon a gallon to much or to little?

Thanks In Advance,
Kay

I have never used salt. They absolutely must be able to get out of the
water or they will expire rapidly. I kept one in very minimal conditions
with mostly fine gravel for a beach and some fresh water for a couple of
years...they like frozen brine shrip cubes among almost anything else.

Brackish water is best. I tend to use marine salt (like Instant Ocean) when
doing brackish tanks, but I guess using aquarium salt works too (from what
I've heard). I know they do better in brackish water (live longer, molt,
etc.), but they can do either. But yes, they need air. :)

Thanks so much for posting this. I purchased sand and instant ocean, I
will have to pick up the brine shrimp. I have shrimp pellets, crab bites
and alot of different fish foods including veggie sticks and algae waffers.
