Using Crushed Coral & LR after storgae?

Hi all,

My 80g tank wiped out 6 months ago and a took it apart for storage. I put
the Crushed Coral in a big bucked and the LR in a bucket with tank water.
Now after six months most of the tank water evaporated leaving the LR
exposed to air.

The obvious question is, can I just put the LR in a new set up and wait for
it to cycle. If its now "dead" at least its a bit of rock that might
populate eventually of new LR? Its only 10lbs so I need more

Do you think the Crushed Coral will be OK or will strange chemical reactions
have taken place in the bucket?

I know you guys in the USA might just buy I all over from scratch but here
in the UK this stuff so expensive. LR is about $10 a pound and the 80lbs of
Crushed coral cost me $120

Any advice appreciated.

I don't know about "strange chemical reactions" but you now have salt
encrusted rock. adding it to a tank at the proper salinity will likely
be a bad thing.

If it were me, i'd rinse it well, then let it sit in a largish volume
of fresh water for a week or two (to dissolve any internal salts)
before using it.

I'd think it would need to be completely cured again. In your place,
I would place it in a large tub or tank with some kind of circulation
for a couple weeks. Perhaps even do a couple small water changes.
Once the ammonia starts to disappear, buy a couple pounds of new LR
and add it to the tub. Wait until water params are acceptable. Place
in new tank.

My first tank I used crush coral as the base, I had it set up for a few
months then for reasons I still dont know, my tank died. I never figured out
how or why it happened< i just knew I had no more live stock. So I quickly
replace my stock Fish for fish and sure enough they were dead within a week.
Now I just lost a few hundred dollars in the span of a few days and I'm none
too happy. I took the tank apart and did some research. There were a lot of
people I spoke with and pretty much they all had different ideas on what was
what in a reef tank.

I threw away the cruched coral and went with a 4inch sand bed mixed with
live sand, then added the LR I also invest a few$$ in a 5 stage RODI water
filter. My tank has been up for over a year and is thriving. My suggestion
is if you're starting a new tank.. do it right the first time or learn from
you mistakes. I added a link to show you how to cure ur Live rock, IT helped
