View Full Version : betta tank

Well, I got the 10 gallon betta tank all planted (heavily), set up with
heater and filter, and two males (separated) moved in yesterday.
My question is on the filter. I was not going to use one, as some may
remember, but it was pointed out to me that I needed something to
circulate the water and disperse the heat around the tank, so I put in a
Duetto 50.
It has an adjustment for flow that I currently (pun) have set midway.
The betta on the side with the filter seems to be drawn into it but can
get away without much effort. By "drawn in" I mean the edge of his fins
wind up in the intake slots about 1/8" of an inch until they hit the
sponge.
Is this a problem? In a day or two, when they have settled in, I'll
take out the filter and set it on minimum flow. In the meantime, I'll
just run it a few hours a day.
Am I doing the right things? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I'm not familiar with the Duetto 50 -- is it a power filter? If so, I'd
switch to a sponge filter or ordinary old box filter, which is what I use in
my betta tanks.

I have a Duetto 50 in my ten gallon betta tank, with four males. My
setup is probably different from yours in that I have a fish-free area
at the back of the tank for the filter and heater. That said, I run my
Duetto wide open, at maximum flow. Newcomers to the tank are always
taken off guard by the current, but they quickly get used to it.
The Duetto is pretty flexible in how it can be positioned - you might
try putting sideways it near the bottom of the tank, so that the water
intake is close to the gravel, and perhaps behind a rock, plant or
driftwood decoration. This will keep the bettas from drifting into it.

It's a submersible filter. Sort of the old box filter with it's own
pump.

Interesting. How do you have the tank split up? Any pictures online?
Or one you could email me?
BTW, both of mine do appear to be settling in. They've each started
what I assume is a bubble nest on the surface in a corner. And they
come out to be fed. Pretty quick adjustment considering I got them
Saturday evening. Maybe the heavy planting helps.

Bettas seem to be pretty bright, as fish go. I had one that took about
two weeks to work out where the food was coming from, but generally
they get comfy within a day or two.

Very nice - wish I'd seen that before I did mine.
