DIY wavebox

Hi there,
I'm looking for a DIY wavebox design - any & all tips, hints & links
would be greatly appreciated. To be precise: I'm not looking for
bucket-type surge devices, but internal, pump-driven wave creating devices.

It's not DIY, but from what I've heard, they work fabulously. WOuld
this fit what you want to do?

I have seen them done using a 5gal bucket with a toilet flapper valve
installed in the bottom. Just cut out the hole, install the mount that
normally goes in the bottom of the tank. A float will open it and gravity
does the rest. Make sure you plumb a pipe above the level of where it should
"flush". That way you have a over flow preventer just in case the flap ever
gets stuck down.

I'm still not sure what you are meaning.
Are you looking for "tuned output of pumps" to create standing waves
or do you want a siphon surge.

If I can find some cheap, tank safe, marine, water valve solenoids
I'd do this:

Plumb a trunk line the width of the tank with a solenoid controled
nozzel every few inches. one nozzel would be left unvalved as a
failsafe to releive pump pressure.

Each solenoid would then be switched on/off at random by a controling
circuit. Light timers could be used for a less random, but less
complicated control. (I'd consider using X10)

Standing wave generation, really. I've found quite some info on the
siphon-based surge systems, but the standing waves seem to be relatively
unknown so far.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm kind of wondering if 'random' outputs
would not extinguish each other overall. Wouldn't a 'wave' require
orchestrated output of pumps to actually grow to some significant size?
I'm currently using 4 Tunze powerheads, with a controller to do the
timing and alternating between outputs. It works, but there are always
dead spots in the tank, no matter how the outputs are directed. I've
seen some impressive demos of the standing wave generators, so I thought
I'd give that type of system a go.

The more I look at the video to demo the system, the more I get the
impression it's just a bucket with level detector that fires the pump
when the water level has risen above a preset threshold.
Now the trick is to find the right frequency/water volume to get maximum
wave buildup.

Hmmmm... probably not. I'm already using alternating water streams
from several powerheads, so I don't think a squid would be
significantly different in that respect.

Exactly what i was thinking
Being 12 volt, those magnetic float reed switches could be plugged right
into the power supply, add a controlable timer and you can adjust the time
the pumps runs for, I pretty sure you could `tune' the wave box to work. On
the guys site he mentioned the used of a modified Tunze Controller.

It was on operation for 6 month now. I do not use water level sensor anymore neither do Tunze. I removed sensor because it is working without it (at constant frequency) almost as well, but keeping it simpler probably mean more reliability.
