View Full Version : Sea Monkeys - Honest!

I want to start a 1 gal. aquarium of sea monkeys. I had
the starter set (12 oz) a couple of years ago but managed
to kill them all with my ignorance.

My problem is that I can only get small packets of "water
purifier" -- they treat only 12 oz. at a time and cost $3
each if you buy them separately. (I already have everything
else I need so don't want to buy a kit.)

My question(s): what is in the water purifier and is there
some other way of preparing distilled water so that the
sea monkeys will survive?

And is there somewhere else I should be posting this? (Is
this group appropriate?)

Thanks in advance,

I suspect that the water purifier is a dechlorinator (chlorine is very
deadly to aquatic life) and some salt.

Both are available at any fish store for *much* cheaper than $3 per 12oz
of water!

You realize they are just brine shrimp? Just go to the local pet store and
get some brine shrimp eggs and have at it. They are sal****er creatures, so
you will need to make a seawater mix to raise them in. I don't know what
this "water purifier" is you are buying, but it probably is not something
you want to use for water creatures. It sounds like it is something that
contains chemicals that kill water life to make it safe to drink for humans.
Instead you need a dechlorinator. Your local fish store should be able to
help you with instructions and anything you need to raise them, since a lot
of people do it to feed their fish.

Would regular aquarim salt suffice or is there another product required?

Actually there are some slight genetic differences between the patented Sea
Monkeys and regular brine shrimp. I dont remember what they are, but there
are some.

But brine shrimp will serve the same effect. :)

They are allegedly a hybrid of marine and freshwater shrimp.
There are lots of shrimp available that are fun to keep without the hype.

The water purifier comes in the Sea Monkey kit specifically to prepare
the water for the "sea monkeys." Yes, I know they're brine shrimp.

The sea monkeys grow larger and live longer, iirc.

The intrepid fishkeeper will add some organ grinder fish (patent pending)
and in pairs they will raise money for you.
