We came back from a long weekend to find a few dead fish and the output
of the canister filter barely there. I assumed it was just the usual,
the prefilter had clogged, so I cleaned it. Nope, still very little
water out. Open the stand and the filter is making a weird noise. Take
filter apart and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary, except for the
unusual noise. Disassemble rotor and try again. Rod breaks. Run to lfs
#1, no spares. Run to lfs #2, ditto. Purchase small submersible pump to
keep surface water movement until replacement arrives Tuesday or
Thursday. :(
Could it be the rotor giving up? Anybody has had similar experiences?
It's an Eheim 2217.

Eheims have a reputation for being very reliable filters, so I can't explain
why I also had the same problem with the impeller rod breaking in my Eheim
2322 (preceded by rattling and slow output). I had cleaned it regularly
beforehand ....
