first, goldfish should never be mixed with tropicals, goldfish excrete too
much ammonia and plus have different dietary needs and need cooler
temperatures then what tropical fish need. when the petshop tested your
water, what did they test for? for everything ok, ammonia should be 0ppm,
nitrites should be 0ppm and nitrates should be below 40ppm. how long has
the tank been up and running for? fancy fat goldfish need 10 gallons pef
fish by the way and regular feeder comet goldfish need 20 gallons per fish.
your tank was over stocked when you just had the 2 goldfish in it.

I've got a 20 gallon tank with three cory cats, a molly, and a couple
weekends ago two 2" long goldfish (given out at trick-or-treat of all
times).. So by those standards I am overstocked.
If I do a 20% change of water weekly will I be OK?

The pet store tested for ammonia, nitrates, and ph for sure, not positive on
what else. I realize goldfish excrete alot of ammonia, I had an ammonia
problem before(I had more goldfish in tank) Tank has been running for 5
weeks. You mean with 2 small goldfish a ten gallon tank is overfilled? Isn't
a goldfish bowl with one a bit of a waste then? By the way, the goldfish
seem quite happy at the 78 degree temp.

Doubt it, more like 40%, but I'd still expect deaths.

78oF is fine for a goldfish. There is no such thing as a goldfish bowl. By the
same
standards that like making a small dog live in a rabbit hutch. Would you like to
see a 6inch+ fish in a small bowl? No!
2 goldfish are too much for a 10 gallon tank for definite. If they are small
(less
than 2 inchs) they will be ok in the short term assuming regular weekly water
changes are carried out, but will need to be moved to a bigger tank in a few
months.

Something a lot of new aquarists aren't aware of is that goldfish and many
other species can grow very large, up to 8 inches or more. Yes, even one
fully grown goldfish in a 10 gallon tank is overstocked.
You should look into which fish stay small. Tetras, danios, rasboras, cory
catfish, and many others only grow to 3 inches or less. Guppies, mollies,
platties, swordtals all stay small ; but can reproduce quickly.
I suggest you go here for a lot of good information :
