a couple of weeks ago I put my male and female betta together and they
engaged in classic betta spawning behavior. Male built the bubble nest,
female seemed to like it and went under the nest. The male wrapped himself
around her and gave her the big squeeze at which time she went completely
limp and you could see some eggs come out of the tube. The male then went
and picked up the eggs and spit them into the bubble nest. Unfortunately for
what ever reason the bubble nest slowly disintegrated and I got no wriggles.
So today I put them back together and things seemed normal up to the point
where the male wraps himself around the female. After doing this they both
go limp with the male sinking slowly to the bottom of the tank all curled up
in a little ball. He recovers in a few seconds and they have repeated this
process over and over again. Obviously he is not supposed to go limp. He
apparently is confused as to his role this time around !!
