View Full Version : Spotting a healthy Angelfish

Another thought on these fish: I've noticed that my healthy angel always
had a very erect and "fanned out" top fin (dorsal fin?). When I look at
some larger angels in the fish store, very often this top fin is closed down
and is kind of laying down rather than sticking up like a shark fin. Does
this indicate that the fish is just stressed out, is outright sick, or mean
nothing at all? I'm trying to be careful about buying fish at the big
stores while I have no quarantine tank.
Thanks for any advice,
dwhite

Dorsal fin should be upright, but in LFS they could be stressed, too many
fish in tank, tank too small etc. My 2 were in a very small tank at LFS with
about 12 others, sad looking but they changed overnight, more colour, fins
up and so healthy and always hungry. They were about 1.5" body size and are
now 2" or 7" counting their fins!! Caudal fins are at least 2.5" now. Mine
are in 260 litre (21" tall) and they need the space. They invariably swim
underneath each other when they dance with each other before spawning.

The fish do come with a 15 day guarantee, so I guess if the stress kills
them they can be returned. I was more concerned with the stress due to
illness, and possibly infecting the rest of the tank.
thanks,
