Last night I decided to clear the algae from my heater.
Today at lunchtime I discovered I had forgotten to plug it back in!
Tank temp was down to 58 degrees Fahrenheit.
Did a 30% water change to raise temp.
Tonight all but one plattie seem to have picked up.
Later added Protozin in case of Ich outbreak.
Lets see what happens
Arthur.

Damn, how cold do you keep your house?
Probably would've been better off just plugging the heat back in -- wild
temperature swings are almost always worse than a simple temperature problem.

I'd never add chemicals INCASE of something - that can do
more harm than good.

Sage advice, especially as noone seems to know what Protozin actually
is. One should never ever medicate prophylactically, IMO.

the tank is not in the house but in a unheated garage and the Protozin
added in case of an Ich outbreak.
Anyway all seems fine, so far all fish eating well.

Thats like me taking anti-biotics incase I might get ill.
Glad the fish are well, I'd stop the medication if nothing
is visibly wrong.

Isn't that the purpose of vaccines?

I added the Protozin (half measure) since I sincerely believe that an
outbreak of ich would occur due to drop in temp.
One or two are starting to flick occasionally.
But I still cannot believe I did not lose any!

Urrgh. Is this the only heater in the tank? If that garage gets cold enough
that a heater failure can drop the tank 20 degrees F in the space of twelve
hours, I'd strongly recommend going with dual heaters. You got lucky this
time, but the aquarium gods usually only give you one warning before they smite
your aquarium big-time.

Glad to hear they made it. This is generally a sign that they were
healthy to start with. My understanding is that in the case of an
incorrect temperature, it's generally better to cool slowly or heat
quickly (depending on exact circumstances of course), so I would have
done the same as you. Check your ammonia & nitrite levels as bacteria go
dormant at low temperatures, so the flicking might be a minor spike in
something.
